The Baltimore Museum of Art (BMA) seeks an experienced Art Packer to assure the safe shipment, handling, packing, storage and installation of artwork both within and outside of the museum.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
· In consultation with the conservators, design and create storage boxes and interior fittings for shipping as well as for internal storage, work with vendors to produce crate shells, and pack all BMA loans – averaging approximately 100 per year.
· Working with the registrars, develop packing and crating estimates for all loans and budgets for proposed exhibitions.
· Maintain an active inventory of packing materials and crates.
· Unpack and repack inbound and outbound non-collection works of art including but not limited to loans, exhibitions and accession candidates, retaining or replacing materials as necessary. Maintain notes on all packing and correct any deficiencies to assure safe transport.
· Serve as the TSA Screening Supervisor for all air shipments originating at the museum.
· Assist in movement and installation of artwork within the building as needed and supervise all contract art handlers working in the registrar’s office.
· Assist with local transport and on occasion, act as a courier for BMA loans or exhibitions.
This full-time, exempt position reports to the Senior Registrar in the Curatorial Division
QUALIFICATIONS
· Bachelor’s Degree, preferably with a concentration in fine art, art history or museum studies
· 3-5 years art handling experience
· 1-3 years of carpentry experience with proficiency in the use of a table saw, band and cross-cut miter saws, belt sander, router, drill/screw gun and glue gun.
· Must be familiar with the operation of a lift, stacker, pallet truck, gantry crane and rigging equipment and be able to drive a 14’ straight truck
· Must be able to lift, carry or push 50-100 lbs, and climb ladders and scaffolding.
