The City Museum is undertaking a major cataloging project for archaeological material on behalf the City of New York and the Landmarks Preservation Commission. In order to complete this project within the project timeline, the City Museum is hiring two Collections Assistants/Catalogers to create and validate object records in a new database, assist with pre-transport cleaning or inventory as needed, receive object deliveries and be the primary contact for object pickups at the City Museum, unpack/repack and handle objects, research objects when necessary, liaise with the City Museum’s digital team to ensure efficient workflow between the two departments. The catalogue will include both prehistoric and historical artifacts, so the candidate should be willing to gain expertise and reach out to subject-matter experts for classification assistance.
This is a temporary fulltime position for the 2014 calendar year with the potential to continue into 2015, starting immediately. The candidate will be based at the City Museum’s storage facility in Brooklyn. The qualified candidate will have significant work experience in historical archaeology collections with in the New York City area. S/he understands database construction and is able to work quickly and accurately as part of a small but enthusiastic team. The successful candidate must be detailed oriented and highly organized; conservation or object handling training is preferred but not required.
Required Skills:
- A graduate degree in archaeology/anthropology or relevant field with emphasis in historical archaeology and artifact studies or a BA in archaeology/anthropology with equivalent work experience.
- 3+ years of field experience in archaeological database management and analysis
- Work experience in a cultural institution such as a museum, library, or archive, and familiarity with standard museum metadata.
- Research and/or work experience with New York area archaeological collections or projects.
- A basic understanding of archaeological investigation in New York City.
- RPA certification or equivalent

Job Requirements
Preferred Skills:
- 3-5 years of CRM experience in the New York Region as a Field Tech or Lab Tech with significant database management experience.
- Able to identify common finds in New York City archaeology including basic prehistoric objects and ceramic wares.
- Significant experience using Museum collections databases.
- Training in basic conservation and collections management techniques.
