The Preparator of UMOCA is responsible for preparing, installing, and assisting with organizing exhibitions within the approved departmental budget. The Preparator is expected to maintain galleries and the operation of exhibitions, as well as serve as a liaison with the county concerning the building and facility issues by communicating upcoming exhibition pieces to ensure they fit within fire/safety code of the county and city. In addition, this position is responsible for assisting the curatorial department with registrar duties, including the fabrication of crates, coordination of international and domestic shipments, as well as documentation of works for both condition reports and exhibition installation. The Preparator is also expected to assist with setting up and staffing events, including art talks, curatorial tours, and exhibition openings.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities
Facility
q Oversees galleries (including, climate control, lighting, alarms, etc.) to ensure proper working order and communicates with the Manager of Operations for any needed maintenance.
q Records all facility related incidents, contracts, and general facility history and reports any incidents to the Executive Director.
q Maintains and coordinates usage of all Museum storage areas, and galleries in a clean and organized manner.
Gallery & Installation q Coordinates and implements all aspects of set-up/take-down of exhibition installation, special events, lectures and programs.
q Coordinates and implements exhibition shipping and transport and assists Curator of Exhibitions with registrar duties
q Coordinates contract installation and staff assistance with approval of Curator of Exhibitions.
q Maintains all exhibition supplies for installation.
q Documents designated events or programs as requested.
General Duties q Assists with event set-up: tables, chairs, sound system, etc.
q Coordinates technical needs for Museum exhibitions and programs.
q Participates in the preparation of the departmental budget.
q Participates in weekly staff, department, and other meetings as needed.
q Participates in selected special events and community projects.
q Performs other duties as required.
Minimum Qualifications q Relative job experience, college degree and/or museum experience highly preferred.
q Ability to lift 70 lbs: tables, chairs, crates, artwork, furniture, etc.
q Proficient in use of power tools, painting, and basic constructing tasks.
q Proficient in basic operation of media equipment: video and digital camera, sound equipment, and media projectors.
q Valid Driver’s License: ability to drive rental vehicles.
q Excellent written and oral communication skills, including strong organizational skills
q Proficiency with Microsoft Office, Adobe Creative Suite, Sketchup, Toast Titanium and other video/audio software.
q Knowledge and interest in contemporary art.
Ability to work independently and as part of a team. Ability to work with UMOCA members, public, and co-workers professionally.
