PALM SPRINGS ART MUSEUM
LEAD PREPARATOR
Reporting to the Designer and Manager of Exhibitions, position is responsible for overseeing all aspects of installation, preparation, and de‑installation, including preparing objects for and removing objects from exhibition; maintaining artworks while on display; maintaining storage areas and working with collections. Oversee museum preparators.
The Lead Preparator will oversee the preparation of galleries for installations and exhibitions; packing/unpacking, handling, and movement of artwork; and preparation of objects for display (mounting, matting, framing, etc.). Additional responsibilities include installing graphics title walls and exhibition labels for exhibitions; installing and maintaining lighting to meet exhibit specifications; managing and maintaining tools and supplies needed for preparation and installation; inspecting exhibition areas to determine safety of objects; and performing necessary upkeep to insure continued enjoyment of exhibitions.
Minimum Qualifications: ¬ BA degree in art, design, or related field; or equivalent experience in design and fabrication of museum exhibits.
¬ A good working knowledge of installation methods, matting, framing, and preparation methods is mandatory.
¬ Substantial museum or professional art handling experience.
¬ Computer skills and graphic design experience also important.
¬ Woodworking or metalworking skills are desirable.
¬ Knowledge of gallery lighting design desirable.
¬ Must be able to lift 80 pounds.
