Museum Preparator I
Under direct supervision, the Museum Preparator I is responsible for the preparation, installation, handling and care of exhibitions and works of art for the Museum's collections move.
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Prepare, hang, install and de-install works of art utilizing proper handling and security techniques. Paint and / or construct walls, pedestals, boxes, fixtures, and other finished structures related to the installation and display of exhibitions and works of art.
• Mat and fit paintings, photographs, paper works, and sculptures in frames and vitrines; perform minor modifications of frames.
• Load and unload works of art and fixtures; handle and carry art objects and receive and dispatch works of art into and out of the Museum.
• Move and repair exhibit fixtures, and ensure that gallery and work areas are well maintained.
• Ability to effectively perform various skilled and semi-skilled tasks, including woodworking, use of adhesives and fasteners, construction methods and use of power tools.
• Perform other related duties as required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education and Training: Possession of a High School diploma or G.E.D. certificate. College course work is desirable. Candidates will be required to successfully complete a proficiency test, under supervision, to assess ability to perform basic activities. Candidates may also be required to present a portfolio of photography and/or craft and construction work.
Work Experience: A minimum of two years related experience or equivalent combination of training and experience.
Skills and Abilities: Knowledge of proper techniques for handling valuable works of art, including those for installing exhibits, crating, and packing and unpacking objects. Ability to read shop drawings. Ability to proficiently utilize shop equipment including stationary and portable power tools and knowledge of or ability to learn how to operate a fork lift and scissors lift. Knowledge of safety procedures related to the handling of chemical solvents, adhesives and solutions. Demonstrated concern for detail, accuracy and neat execution of work. Ability to work cooperatively with supervisors, museum staff, students, outside clients, vendors, volunteers and the general public. Ability to learn the Museum's billing procedures for supply procurement.
This is a union position subject to the provisions of the collective bargaining agreement.
