SUMMARY DESCRIPTION:
One of the newest museums in New York City, the Rubin Museum of Art (“Rubin Museum”) is dedicated to creating a dynamic environment that stimulates learning, promotes understanding, and inspires personal connections to the idea, cultures, and art of Himalayan Asia. Now in its tenth year, the Rubin Museum welcomes over 175,000 visitors annually and has 6,000 members. The Rubin Museum’s preeminent collection includes works of art from present-day Afghanistan, Bhutan, China, India, Mongolia, Nepal, Pakistan, and the Tibetan Plateau. The pace is lively with approximately ten changing exhibitions and more than 250 public programs a year.

The Installation Preparator and Coordinator works within the Rubin Museum’s Operations Division and oversees and coordinates the preparation and installation of all exhibitions. In this position the Coordinator is required to work collaboratively and effectively with various departments, including but not limited to: Curatorial; Education & Engagement; Collections Management; and Exhibition Design & Implementation. The Coordinator reports to the Exhibition Designer/Chief Preparator.

Responsibilities:
Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:



Responsible for the recruitment, training and coordination of temporary exhibition art handlers at times of exhibition changes. Efficiently manages labor hours and expenditures.

Oversees the preparation of exhibition spaces for permanent and temporary loan exhibitions.

Oversees the preparation of exhibition furniture, cases, mounts, graphics and other non-art items necessary for the display of works of art and installing components in exhibition and public spaces using sound conservation methods and techniques.

Conducts routine inspection and maintenance of exhibition spaces and components.

Dismantles exhibition cases and components, and is responsible for the moving materials to storage spaces.

Maintains records of exhibition technical specifications, as well as a materials and furniture inventory.

Other duties as assigned.


Qualifications:


Minimum of 3 to 5 years of practical work experience required.

Knowledge of and skill with a variety of specialized techniques, methods, materials, and tools used to prepare, install, and dismantle exhibition components and visual materials.

Experience and skill in performing general carpentry and painting projects, ability to use hand and power tools, and using paint, adhesives, and wood finishing products with proficiency.

Knowledge of conservation principles and methods to be able to safely secure works of art in exhibition cases and to mount visual materials in exhibition areas.

Ability to read and interpret design specifications. Basic sketching and drafting skills are desirable.

Familiarity with computer calendar and scheduling systems a plus.

Excellent communication and leadership skills.

Ability to bend, lift, and carry work from ladders/lifts.

Ability to work with heavy materials and equipment.
