Object Conservator

The Henry Ford seeks qualified applicants for the position of Object Conservator for a wide variety of historical and mechanical collections, including transportation, timekeeping and decorative arts. The conservator will be responsible for the examination, treatment, documentation and overall care of the assigned collections.

This position represents an excellent opportunity for a recent graduate to engage with a very wide range of materials spanning the 19th-21st centuries comprising many are large variety of materials, including metals, glass, paint and plastics. It is an ideal project for candidates with experience and interest in mechanical artifacts and challenging unique treatment issues. The successful candidate will be responsible for the execution of artifact conservation activities as well as providing training and supervision for specialists, technicians, volunteers as assigned. Reports to the Chief Conservator. This is a full time position with benefits.

Preferred: M.A. in Art conservation or equivalent experience.
Knowledge, skills, and abilities: Excellent eye-hand coordination.
Excellent interpersonal skills and willingness to work in a team-oriented environment. Good verbal and written communication skills. Must be in good physical condition in order to stoop, bend, climb ladders, lift and carry moderate (up to twenty pounds) and occasionally heavy (up to 40 pounds) loads. Must be able to wear a respirator. Preference will be given to applicants who are currently eligible to worked in the United States.
