Title: Waterfront Crew
Reports to: Waterfront Foreman
South Street Seaport Museum, located in a 12 block historic district, once the city’s main
port, is dedicated to preserving and interpreting the history of New York as a port city.
SSSM owns and operates a large fleet of historic ships at Pier 16 in the East River, including
the 1907 lightship AMBROSE, the 1885 wrought-iron ship WAVERTREE, the 1885 schooner
PIONEER, the 1930 wooden tug W.O. DECKER, the 1911 barque PEKING and the 1893
wooden schooner LETTIE G. HOWARD.
South Street Seaport Museum is currently seeking Waterfront Crew. Applicant will be
responsible for care and specialized maintenance duties aboard our fleet of wood, steel,
and iron historic vessels. Workweek: Tuesday – Friday 0700 – 1530 / Saturday 0900 - 1700
Responsibilities:
Work with the waterfront team to advance the safety, preservation, restoration, and
operation of historic vessels.
Perform regular maintenance and care of our vessels including wood work, metal work,
preparation and painting, pumping of bilges, adjusting cleaning, rigging work, etc.
Manage, train, and work alongside volunteers in restoration projects.
Assume responsibility for discrete projects and carry them from planning to completion
with minimal supervision
Qualifications:
Broad demonstrated experience in vessel maintenance and repair, including a
professional-level skill in on or more of the following: boat joinery and woodworking,
rigging, engineering, or electrical. Preference will be given to applicants with skills in
more than one trade.
Ability and comfort in working on moving vessels, climbing ladders, lifting heavy weights
with or without mechanical assistance. Line-handling, ship-mooring, and/or skill as
deckhand on traditional vessels a plus.
Basic inventory, accounting, and computer skills are required.

Pay range: mid-thirties, depending on experience
