This is a full time position, responsible for the daily care and coordination of exhibitions, programs, and facilities at the Miller Gallery at Carnegie Mellon University, including all aspects of installation. Manages 9000 square foot gallery facility, equipment, and other inventories, and coordinates university personnel, outside contractors, and vendors for assistance with maintenance, upgrades, and installations. Supervises and works closely with all exhibiting and guest artists, curators, lecturers, and performers. Directs part-time staff, student assistants and interns in their various roles. Responsible for the care and security of artwork. Oversees nationally touring exhibitions and serves as exhibition courier at host venues. Collaborates to ensure smooth operation of exhibitions. Requires extensive knowledge of art gallery operations and facilities management, knowledge of university policies, and budgeting. Reports to the Gallery Chair. Collaborates with other gallery staff and guest contributors on research, coordination, and exhibition design of the gallery's contemporary exhibitions, traveling exhibitions and student exhibitions, and any associated outreach and educational programs such as lectures, workshops, conferences, symposia, screenings, performances, and tours.
Minimum Qualifications:
Education: Bachelor of (Fine) Arts or related field or equivalent combination of training and experience.
Licenses: Driver's License.
Experience: Three or more years in exhibition administration or project management. Considerable experience working as an art handler and/or registrar and in exhibit design, fabrication and installation; managerial experience. Facilities management experience; budgeting experience.
Skills: Extensive knowledge of art gallery operations and contemporary art field; broad understanding of art exhibition practices and exhibition design; excellent written and verbal communication skills; strong interpersonal skills to communicate effectively with creative individuals from a variety of cultures and backgrounds; ability to install/deinstall, pack, store and ship art professionally and with strict adherence to archival needs; experience with exhibition lighting design and track lighting systems; broad knowledge and skills using and maintaining audio and video equipment and computers, including multi-channel video projections and HDMI computer interface; digital photography for documentation of exhibitions and events; ability to expertly produce exhibition apparatus such as pedestals, frames, tables and shelves; expertise with with power tools and their safe use; knowledge of registration methods, development of packaging and crates, shipping, and insuring art domestically and internationally; excellent project planning and coordination skills including budgeting experience; familiarity with exhibition related contracts and documents including loan agreements, condition reports, insurance lists and shipping manifests; familiarity with U.S. customs and copyright issues and laws; Mac and PC computer literacy and familiarity; proficiency in Adobe CS, Google Drive & Calendar, Sketchup, and Microsoft Office suite.
Physical Mobility: Extremely mobile; monitors and maintains space on three floors of 9000-sq ft building; requires frequent lifting and moving of artwork, art displays and equipment; travel to campus and community locations, artist studios, galleries, museums; operation of rental trucks/vans in trips of 400+/- miles in all kinds of weather. Requires operation of hand tools (hammers, saws, etc.), power tools (drills, table saw, sanders, etc.), equipment such as hydraulic lift, lighting grid, ladders scaffolding, projectors; frequent lifting of approx. 50 lbs.
Mental: Requires self-motivated, dedicated individual with ability to work both independently and in a team and collaborate effectively hands-on with creative artists, curators, students, administrators and the general public; ability to work under pressure, with frequent changes and interruptions, and to meet inflexible deadlines; ability to pay attention to detail while maintaining a broad perspective; ability to remain calm when dealing with difficult situations or individuals; ability to prioritize effectively and creatively problem-solve.
Other: Weekend and evening hours regularly required, including but not limited to attendance at all exhibition openings and many special events. Must be able to safely operate motor vehicles; the successful candidate must submit to a driver's license verification and must complete university Defensive Driver training.
Preferred Qualifications:
Education: Masters degree in arts related field.
Experience: Experience in an academic setting and/or art museum/gallery setting.
Skills: Ability to troubleshoot and repair all audio-visual equipment, flat screen TVs, computers, video projectors, parabolic speakers, amps, etc. Extensive fine art framing and mount making experience; proficiency with AutoDesk; exhibition courier experience; metal working and construction experience; knowledge of digital fabrication tools.
Other: Familiarity with regional arts and cultural communities. Interest in community-building.
