Description:The Miller Gallery at Carnegie Mellon University seeks a dedicated and detail-oriented Exhibitions Technician. This is a part-time position assisting the Exhibitions Coordinator with hands-on preparations of exhibitions including: installation and deinstallation of artworks and other exhibition materials; construction of exhibition apparatus such as pedestals, tables, frames, and exhibition walls; facilities upkeep and renovation such as painting, extensive cleaning and detailed maintenance of galleries; and other tasks related to exhibition design, preparation and management. The gallery contains 7000 sq ft of exhibition space and is located in the Purnell Center for the Arts on the Pittsburgh campus. Qualifications:
Minimum:
Experience: Minimum of 1 year experience working as a preparator/art handler at a museum, contemporary art gallery or equivalent work experience.
Skills: Must be proficient at carpentry, drywalling, painting and working with a high level of detail. Must be able to install and handle a variety of audiovisual equipment, including projectors, monitors, computers, speakers and DVD decks. Must be able to safely and competently handle loaned artworks and equipment with a focus on the safety of the objects.
Physical Mobility: Must be able to lift up to 60 lbs, stand for long periods of time and be comfortable working safely at elevated heights on ladders and lifts when required.
Environmental Conditions: During installation & deinstallation of exhibits, working environment may include noise/dust due from power tool use, paint fumes, etc. Some exhibits include audio.
Mental: Must have a positive attitude and an aptitude for quick learning and problem solving as well as be able to work effectively alone or with students, interns and other gallery staff.
Other: Must be available to work varying schedules depending on the gallery's exhibition and installation schedule. Work schedules will be generally determined one month in advance; although some exceptions may occur.
Preferred:
Education: Bachelors in the Arts or associated fields.
Licenses: Pennsylvania Drivers License
Experience: Three years experience working at a contemporary art gallery, museum or equivalent work experience.
Skills: Autocad, digital fabrication experience; professional framing experience; proficiency with welding and metal fabrication techniques; experience with condition reporting procedure and exhibition management; proficiency with the Adobe Suite, Microsoft Office and Google documents; and proficiency with audiovisual software and editing.
