The Art Museum of West Virginia University is seeking a Museum Preparator. This position will be responsible for fabricating and installing exhibitions, objects, and supporting materials in galleries, building storage mounts and crates, and lighting exhibitions. Applying museum standards, the preparator will be able to think creatively to develop solutions that meet both aesthetic concerns and security requirements.
To qualify for this position you must have an MFA or Master’s in related field. You must also have a minimum of 2 years of work experience and 3 years of professional experience handling works of art. Your experience must be in the following areas; Working with metal and wood; Art storage and display methods, techniques, and procedures; The operation of woodworking, metal working, and painting equipment; Art museum security systems and procedures; Principles and practices of museum exhibit and display design, construction, and finishing, carpentry work, alterations, and repairs; Lighting techniques in a gallery setting; Mount making and preservation techniques; Exhibit installation and picture framing and hanging; Exhibit scheduling and coordination techniques; Project management principles, practices, techniques, and tools and experience with art handling, storage, packing, crating, and installation. It is also preferred that the selected candidate is familiar with PC and Mac computer systems and software; Visio, Vectorworks, AutoCad, SketchUp, or other planning software experience preferred.
Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
