Job Description:The Historical Outreach Foundation is seeking applications for a full time Exhibit’s Technician. The Foundation is the non-profit ‘Friend” of the Oregon Military Museum which is in the midst of a large Capital Campaign and under construction.
To Qualify You Must Have:
-working knowledge of current museum exhibit and design techniques, mechanisms, layout options, theme/purpose translation techniques, and interpretive, presentation and delivery requirements.
-ability to effectively communicate proposed exhibit designs and functions to less knowledgeable and experienced staff and volunteers.
-ability to function at an equivalent, professional working level with design/construction firm.
-ability to translate more generally expressed exhibit concepts themes/purpose into effective detailed exhibit presentations.
-demonstrated experience in the creation, maintenance, and management of Museum exhibitions.
-education, training and/or experience demonstrating knowledge of general museum operating procedures and standards and accepted artifact handling standards.
-excellent research, writing, editing, communication and organizational skills; experience working with volunteers; ability to communicate effectively with military personnel; experience with word processing, spreadsheet and graphic design software; demonstrated creative problem solving skills; experience with project management. Prefer candidates with bachelor’s degree or coursework in education, art, graphic design, interior design, military history or related areas.
Duties and Responsibilities:
-Coordinate, supervise and implement the creation, installation and de-installation of permanent and changing exhibitions. Manage the design process for new exhibits and oversee exhibit fabrication for quality, appropriateness and durability. Coordinate communication with exhibit design/construction firm, exhibits committee, Oregon Military Department and the Oregon Military Museum staff.
-Working with exhibits committee and exhibit design firms, develop exhibit content to include conducting research, writing, proofreading, image acquisition and object identification. Work with experienced volunteer researchers to tap institutional knowledge. Accumulate, acquire and track information, photographs, graphics and objects for use in exhibits.
-Develop themes and work with the exhibit committee to best communicate the Oregon Military history story.
-Write for newsletters, text panels, marketing materials and other interpretive materials.
-Design and build archival mounts for artifacts using accepted Museum procedures and standards.
-Oversee, train and best use volunteer workers with exhibit changeovers; taking down and packing exhibit materials; patching, texturing, and painting gallery walls, installing exhibit furniture, text and graphic panels, artifacts and specimens while observing the careful handling and accepted procedures associated with museum or exhibit objects.
-Maintain interactive exhibits in good working order.
-Direct and assist volunteers in the general upkeep and cleanliness of exhibition areas, storage areas and maintaining supplies.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Requires the ability to lift up to 50 pounds, install and take down exhibits, pack and unpack bulky items and climb ladders. Must be able to see the full spectrum of colors.
