Assistant Caretaker, Facilities – The Lightning Field, New Mexico
ASSISTANT CARETAKER needed for this seasonal position located approximately 40 miles from Quemado, NM, to transport visitors and maintain properties and facilities at The Lightning Field, a work of land art by Walter De Maria owned and managed by Dia Art Foundation.
This Assistant Caretaker will be required to live on-site in a residence provided by Dia from April through mid-November each year to maintain the sculpture, property, buildings, structures, and vehicles at the site. This person will also transport visitors between Quemado and the site in a Dia vehicle. The ideal candidate will have excellent mechanical skills and facilities maintenance experience; extensive experience living in a very remote rural location, be able to operate a four-wheel-drive vehicle and have expertise in off-road driving in adverse conditions, and be highly independent and reliable. This person will receive training in specialized skills from the Caretaker, work alongside other employees at the site, and routinely communicate with Dia staff in Albuquerque. During the visiting season (May 1-Oct. 31), this Assistant Caretaker must be available seven days a week and on call 24/7, however, there will be approximately 15 scheduled days off during the visiting season and additional days off may also be arranged with other on-site staff. Dia will provide a competitive salary for approx. 8 months of work and will provide housing accommodations.

This Assistant Caretaker will work from April through mid-November each year to help prepare and close down operations for the visiting season, perform housekeeping duties including food preparation, transport visitors between Quemado and the site in a Dia vehicle, and oversee housekeeping staff and drivers. The ideal candidate for this position must have extensive experience living in a very remote rural location, be able to operate a four-wheel-drive vehicle and have expertise in off-road driving in adverse conditions, and be highly independent and reliable. Must have good supervisory, interpersonal and communication skills. Basic bookkeeping skills desirable. This person will be supervised by the Caretaker, work alongside other employees on-site, and have routine communication with other Dia employees in Albuquerque. During the visiting season (May 1-Oct. 31), this Assistant Caretaker will work five days a week, M-F; weekend work may occasionally be required.
