General Summary:
Responsible for the care and management of the Museum’s Collections and Collections records for Discovery Place, Inc. (DPI).
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Curates the collections in order to ensure their conservation, documentation, and adequacy to meet the needs of DPI.
Serves as the Museum’s registrar, documenting, and maintaining records concerning the routing handling of museum objects within the museum thus ensuring accountability for each object in custody.
Develops and implements educational activities and resources to fulfill the DPI mission.
Prepares objects for use in exhibits and programs.
Develops educational materials for educators and provides assistance to educators.
Assists in program and exhibit development implementation.
Assists with special promotional and educational activities of the museum.
Assists with exhibit set-up and takedown when museum objects are involved.
Supervises the general maintenance and the daily operations and activities of the Collections unit.
Maintains the organization, cleanliness and neatness of the storage facility and work area of Collections.
Orders and maintains necessary supplies for the routine activities and operations of the Collections Department.
Trains and supervises staff and volunteers working in the Collections Department.
Leads Collections Committee, providing reports and updates to all members.
Direct day-to-day activities of Collections department team of staff and volunteers. Ensure products from this area meets Discovery Place Inc.’s highest level of quality.
Competency:
Experience and knowledge of natural history.
Experience and knowledge of AAM standards.
Knowledge of chemical safety and storage.
Experience in specimen preparation techniques.
Experience in graphics and labeling techniques.
MS Office competency including Access and Excel.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Must be detail oriented and organized with excellent time management skills.
Willingness to work as part of a team and exhibit good interpersonal communication skills.
Must exercise good judgment and always render a customer service approach.
Meet all reasonable corporate and legal standards of quality, accuracy, and established deadlines.
Assume additional responsibilities as assumed or directed by the Director, Exhibition Design.
Working Conditions:
Primarily an office environment with occasional exposure to outdoors and/or need to migrate through front and back of house areas of DPI sites.
Physical Demands:
Ability to move through and access all Collection’s areas.
Occasionally lifting up to 50-lbs.
Able to push up to 200-lbs.
Good manual dexterity.
Visual accuracy.
Climb ladders.
Stoop/crawl/bend.

Job RequirementsQualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in the natural sciences, Anthropology, Museum Studies, Art History, or similar.
Two years of experience in the collections department of a museum preferred.
Exhibit sense of ownership and empowerment.
