Position: Chief Preparator
Department: Exhibitions
Reports to: Chief Curator
Status: Full-time, exempt
Position SummaryThe Chief Preparator assumes primary responsibility for the daily operation and maintenance of exhibitions and carries out regular art handling duties of The Contemporary Jewish Museum (The CJM).
The Chief Preparator works with exhibitions and curatorial staff to plan, implement, and manage a production schedule of exhibitions and installations. The Chief Preparator supervises a full-time Fabricator, works closely with The CJM’s Exhibitions Coordinator/Registrar, and hires and trains a team of on-call gallery technicians. This position will liaise closely with artists and designers on planning and preparations for a full calendar of exhibitions in multiple galleries.

Essential Job Responsibilities

Develops and maintains a design/build shop, reducing or eliminating the need for outsourcing
Reviews and/or produces technical drawings, assists in bid preparation and oversees fabrication process including walls, cases, pedestals, armatures, etc.
Plans and directs the installation, disassembly, and packing related to exhibitions
Produces drawings, cut lists, and detailed instructions for fabrication and finishing of casework and mounts
Provides technical expertise and oversight on installation maintenance and troubleshooting of all audio visual and new media work
Directs, analyzes and maintains exhibitions lighting within relevant light-level restrictions
Generates detailed gallery instructions following the opening of new exhibitions
Researches exhibition related materials and AV equipment; coordinates relationships with suppliers and contractors
Creates budgets and manages expense projections
Using accepted museum standards, creates a safe environment by ensuring use of appropriate materials, equipment, and methods to display, store, and pack works of art
Provides OSHA training to exhibitions staff; oversees proper and safe operation of power and hand tools

Job Qualifications

B.A. /B.F.A. in Art, Art History, Museum Studies, or related field
5 years experience managing installation projects; handling art work in a museum or contemporary art setting on an installation crew
Experience with archival methods of handling, preparing, and packing works of art
Ability to read and create technical drawings, building plans, specifications and diagrams
Thorough knowledge of building codes, construction techniques, materials and tools
Excellent organizational skills with attention to detail and ability to effectively manage multiple tasks and strict deadlines
Valid California driver's license and safe driving record

Physical Requirements

Must be able to lift 50 lbs., work on high lifts, and climb ladders and scaffolding
Ability to work hours that meet the Museum’s needs, including mornings, some evenings and weekends
