Art Handler

The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts seeks one Art Handler to ensure the safety of works of art in the care of the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts during movement, installation and storage. This position will move and install valuable art objects in various locations; pack and unpack objects; maintain collections storage areas to ensure the safety of the art; create custom crate interiors for outgoing loans; frame/unframe two-dimensional works; and perform other miscellaneous art handling duties as required. May courier artwork and participate in exhibition installation planning as opportunities allow.
Qualifications: The successful candidate will have experience in the handling and installation of artwork, ideally in a museum or gallery setting. Knowledge of museum-standard practices for the storage, movement and display of objects is essential. Knowledge of art history and principles of conservation is preferred. Moderate skill in the operation of hand and power fabrication tools is required in addition to moderate computer skills. Experience with framing methods is a plus as is familiarity with hoists, lifts and other material handling equipment. The selected candidate will demonstrate excellent communication skills and the ability to effectively collaborate with colleagues in potentially stressful situations with multiple priorities and overlapping deadlines. Graduation from high school is required or the equivalent training and experience related to the job. Candidates must also be in good health and able to lift and move objects greater than 50 lbs. A security background check will be required.
Starting Salary: $28,000 with full state benefits.
