The Burke Museum Ethnology Collections Manager will manage the Oceanic and Asian ethnographic and Ethnology Archival collections of the Burke Museum, including accessions, deaccessions, research and catalogue collections, maintain records, create storage mounts, perform Integrated Pest Management (IPM), manage external loans and Burke Museum exhibit loans, facilitate research visits, inventory collections, cultivate donors, assist with storage renovation projects and assist with the New Burke building move.
Under the direction of the Senior Curator of Oceanic and Asian Ethnology, the Collections Manager will foster and maintain mutually beneficial relationships between the Burke Museum and the Pacific Islander and Asian constituents to increase access to the collection. The Collections Manager will facilitate public outreach and access to the Ethnology Oceanic and Asian collections, including establishing and maintaining relationships with individuals, artists, indigenous communities, arts organizations, coordinating research and community visits, conducting tours, arranging for collections visits, assisting researchers, and external communications. As a member of the Culture department, the Ethnology Collections Manager will work with a team of Curators, other Collections Managers, assistants, students and volunteers.

Create annual reports itemizing visitor requests, research and community requests for Ethnology
Assist with grant writing to provide additional funding for collections care and storage upgrades, as needed

Basic Functions:


Management, Maintenance and Preventive Conservation. Care and manage Oceanic and Asian ethnology collections, including paperwork for accessions and deaccessions, handling, cleaning, inventory, preventive conservation, artifact numbering, storage mounts, researching, describing, cataloguing, and photo-documentation of ethnographic and archival artifacts. Supervise undergraduate and graduate student practicum projects, hourly staff, interns and volunteers on a variety of on-going defined projects in the Oceanic and Asian collections as needed. Provide general collections management training, guidance and supervision for various projects that students are involved in. Oversee the hiring and work schedules for work-study or hourly staff as needed.
Access to Oceanic and Asian collections. Process outgoing loans for in-house exhibits and loans to other museums and institutions; includes communicating with borrowers, assessment of artifact stability for loan, creating condition reports for individual artifacts, artifact appraisals for insurance purposes, coordinating mounts and case arrangements for exhibition, oversee packing and shipping arrangements and loan fees. Provide research access to Ethnology Oceanic and Asian collections via phone, email, mail and facilitate general research and community visits to the museum. Review catalog records and image data for these collections for the website.
Other responsibilities. Complete major project to inventory, sort, catalogue and digitize holdings in Ethnology Archives. Manage IPM program and environmental monitoring for Ethnology. Shared responsibility for managing the operations budget and rectifying this budget on My Financial Desktop. Create annual reports itemizing visitor requests, research and community requests. Assist with grant narratives as needed.



Public Outreach. Assist the public with general information, artifact care suggestions, and artifact identification through individual appointments, email and the Burke Museum Artifact ID Day. Escort visitors with behind-the-scenes tours of the Ethnology collections and participate in public outreach programs such as Dawg Days/Chocolate Fountain, Meet the Mammals, Burke 101 exhibits, the Burke Blog, Behind The Scenes Members Night, Artifact ID Day and Curator’s Dinner.



Building Oceanic and Asian collections. Cultivate, communicate and meet with potential donors and assess possible acquisitions in conjunction with Curators. Purchase objects for permanent collections, with approval of Curators.
