Art Preparation & Installation

With more than 120,000 objects dating from ancient times to the present, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) is the largest art museum in the western United States. Reporting to the Manager of Art Preparation and Installation, the Art Preparator ensures works of art are transported and installed in the museum in a safe and expeditious manner.

Some duties include:installation and deinstallation of exhibits, adhering to accepted collections management procedures; transports art within the museum and documents
location; operates trucks and heavy equipment to move art; transports works of art to and from the museum; assists registrars to keep track of inventory; constructs architectural models; designs and fabricates custom mounts and hardware for installations; cuts, mats, mounts and frames artwork; prepares galleries to display the artwork; installs mounts for earthquake mitigation, wall labels and information panels; prepares and attaches written or pictorial instructions for unpacking, storage, or for exhibition of contents of shipment; generates scale drawings for difficult mounts.


The qualified candidate will have a bachelor’s degree and at least 3 years of experience as an Art Preparator. Knowledge of museum procedures and strong interpersonal skills are required.
