Position is temporary:
Full time (40 hours/week) January 2016 – June 2016.
Half time (20 hours/week) July 2016 – June 2017.
Funding beyond June 2017 has not yet been secured
Duties:
The Art in Public Places (AIPP) program facilitates the acquisition and manages the care of artwork in the State Art Collection. This temporary position reports to the AIPP Collections Manager and is responsible for the implementation of My Public Art Portal. The Portal is a web-based, searchable database of artwork in the State Art Collection. It currently includes more than 600 artworks and is being grown through designated state-funding to include at least half of the 4,500 artwork collection.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
In collaboration with the Collections Manager, manages of all aspects of the implementation of My Public Art Portal, including:
Manages overall project budget, designs strategies for project implementation, and monitors and adjusts timeline to meet established goals.
Develops contractor position/s and selection criteria; establishes training documents and protocols; selects, trains, and oversees contractor/s responsible for research, writing, and preparation of artwork database records prior to publication in the Portal.
Acts as quality control for Portal content, including contextual writing, data, mapping, and image preparation and selection.
Determines equipment needs and manages related procurement.
Uses user feedback discovery to develop system content and design to more fully meet user needs.
Responsible for all project reporting, including preparing reports required by the Office of the Chief Information Officer.
Leads regular project Steering Committee meetings.
Develops and implements user feedback/discovery process, such as focus groups, surveys, comparable system research, and/or user observation.
Manages the implementation of an artwork inventory across Washington at K-12 schools, colleges, universities, and state agencies.
Evaluates strategies for inventory implementation, including artwork prioritization, necessary contractor expertise and location/s, revisions to inventory app/tool, travel logistics, and degree and method of on-site evaluations.
Develops contractor scope of work and selection criteria; establishes training documents and protocols; selects, trains, and oversees contractor/s responsible for physical inventory.
Some travel for training and project oversight is expected.
Qualifications:
Required Qualifications:
A Bachelor’s degree in Visual Arts, Art History, Arts Administration, or related field;
AND
At least two (2) years of professional experience in museum or public art registration or collections management, art curation, public art administration or public art project management, visual arts program management, or related visual arts field;
AND
Intermediate knowledge of art collections management or similar database systems and knowledge of art collections management best practices, including general artwork inventory practices;
Demonstrated project management skills including effective goal setting, risk assessment, budget and timeline management, communication, reporting, project implementation, issue resolution, evaluation, contractor selection and management;
Demonstrated leadership skills training, coaching, setting expectations, assigning, and evaluating the work of contractors and staff;
Understanding of contemporary visual art, contemporary art materials (works on paper, outdoor sculpture, mixed media), and public art environments (active environments with significant public engagement); and
Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint);
Excellent writing and editing skills.
Desired Qualifications:
Technical and working knowledge of standards of the public art field:
Experience writing for web
Working knowledge of public-sector processes like procurement, ethics, and reporting
General understanding of networked and cloud servers
WACs and RCWs (43.200.17) governing the Art in Public Places Program
Art-related legal issues (e.g. copyright and artists rights laws)
Advanced public management skills:
Managing public perception and risk
State ethics laws and standards; working with a commission/board of directors system; the decision-making structures of the state’s institutions; and State procurement processes
Public presentations (preparing and presenting reports concerning activities, expenses, budgets and other project-related information or proposals)
