Production Technician

Production Technician’s Job Description:
The Production Technician position will be a part time, hourly position, but may transition to full time for the right candidate. The Production Technician will work in the Production Department, sharing time between three service lines: Mountmaking, the Frame Shop, and Crate/Pack. Time will be allocated based on the needs of each department and will change weekly. The service lines have separate locations, and the Production Technician will be required to report for work each day in Kent, Belltown (downtown Seattle) or Renton according to their weekly schedule.
Work experience:
The ideal candidate will have a resume of skills across many art- and production-related areas. Experience in metalworking and mountmaking is required. The ideal candidate will also have experience in fine woodworking, fine art framing, and/or fine art crating and packing. An arts or art handling background is also preferred. An ability to interpret and understand written instructions, diagrams, layouts, drawings and schematics will be required for this position. A thorough knowledge of the principals of design and construction is also required. Due to the nature of the position, a willingness to learn is essential.
Candidates must be able to solve problems creatively and independently before and during construction and manufacture, use spatial reasoning in everyday tasks, and adapt to a fluid work environment. Candidates must also be able to safely use (or learn the safe use of) machinery such as lathes, grinders, table saws, bench tools, as well as electric and pneumatic hand tools.
Above all, the Production Technician must demonstrate pride, ownership and dedication to craft on a professional level. This the unifying factor in the work done at Artech and the work expected of the Production Technician.
Responsibilities:
Within all service lines and departments, the Production Technician will:
- Follow written and verbal instructions from supervisors, department managers and coworkers
- Work independently and as part of a team to meet production goals and deadlines
- Prioritize between tasks as required
- Work safely and utilize proper protective equipment for each task
- Track their use of time and materials within each department
- Clean and maintain the facilities, tools and machinery as needed
- Measure accurately and safely handle all objects brought into each department
- Maintain client confidentiality at all times
- Work under the supervision of coworkers and managers to ensure safety and quality
- Work while standing for 8 hours
- Be able to lift and carry 80lbs
- Possess a valid Washington State Drivers’ license or obtain one prior to hire
- Pass a full background check
Within the Mountmaking Department, the Production Technician will create museum-quality mounts for fine art, ethnographic objects, artifacts and antiques:
- Weld, braze, machine and finish various types of metal to create mounts according to plans and schematics provided by the Mountmaking Department Production Manager
- Perform occasional on-site fitting and de-fitting of objects
- Assist with the research and selection of materials and technologies to use in the fabrication of mounts and fixtures
Within the Frame Shop, the Production Technician will fabricate and assemble museum-quality frames and displays:
- Cut, join, and spline hardwoods and prefinished moldings
- Build wooden strainers and panels
- Utilize fine woodworking techniques to mill lumber in-house to create frame profiles
- Utilize fine woodworking techniques to join frames
Within the Crate/Pack Department, the Production Technician will build and pack fine art shipping crates:
- Work with plywood and lumber to construct crate shells
- Work with archival materials and foams to prepare crate interiors
- Pack 2D and 3D works into crates in-house
- Perform occasional on-site packing of objects into crates
