SUMMARY

The Art Handler’s primary duties focus on the protection and display of works of art in the Museum.
This person will ensure the safety of art in its handling and movement throughout the Museum campus,
as well as fabrication of crates, object mounts, and exhibition furniture. The person must maintain
shop equipment and exercise safe shop practices. The Art Handler position focuses on creating strong
relationships with coworkers, specifically the Registrars, Curatorial, and Conservation Departments,
and Head of the Design Studio. Must be self-motivated, able to schedule and pace their workload, work
well under pressure in a team environment, meet deadlines and coordinate multiple projects
simultaneously. This person must be detail-oriented and have the ability to multi task and follow-
through while meeting the high expectations associated with the installation and deinstallation process.
This person must also be willing to learn new assignments and the details involved both for continuous
improvement overall and for personal growth in the seeking of additional training or knowledge to better
assist in forthcoming projects.


KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES



The Art Handler performs the following essential duties. Other duties may be assigned as needs arise.



Handling and movement of artwork during installation and de-installation in galleries and storage areas and the moving of crated or packed works on and off vehicles throughout the Museum campus



Creation of shop drawings based on information provided by the Head of the Design Studio



Fabrication of exhibitions furniture including pedestals, platforms and object mounts using wood, metal, paint, fabric and other materials



Fabrication of new or retrofitting of previously fabricated crates for the transportation of artwork



Packing and unpacking of artwork



Preparation of galleries for display of artwork including painting, dry walling and moving of freestanding walls, rough and finish carpentry and initial exhibition lamping



Installation of gallery labels and didactics for both collections and exhibitions galleries



Maintenance of a functional and safe carpentry shop including recommending the purchase and repair of hand and power tools and safety equipment, cleaning and organizing of equipment and supplies, monitoring the inventory of materials and ordering when appropriate and complying with OSHA regulations related to the operation of equipment and handling of materials.


EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE



Requires college-level coursework in studio art, art history or related discipline (Bachelor’s degree in an art related field preferred)



Minimum 2-3 years related experience in a museum setting that includes regular handling and packing of works of art and finish carpentry work or an equivalent combination of education and experience.



Knowledge of and or experience with archival and conservation procedures and materials is a plus.



Must have a valid state driver’s license
