Supervises the staff and daily activities of the Preparation Department. Oversees installation and maintenance of exhibitions. Serves as liaison between the Museum and trades for construction, maintenance and repair work in the galleries. Supervises Preparators.
RequirementsResponsibilities:
Ensures the safety and appearance of the collections and all Museum galleries and exhibitions as well as objects in storage.
Recruits, hires, supervises and coaches the Preparators.
With the department head, manages and performs the installation and changing of exhibitions and displays.
Assists with the scheduling of construction required for special exhibitions or new cases.
Assists in the periodic inventory of the collections.
Conducts daily inspection of galleries and reports any problems to the appropriate staff member.
Ensures that the cases, shelves, cover glass, lights, etc. are in good working condition.
With the department head, is responsible for the movement of glass between exhibition cases, storage, photographic studio and workroom.
Assists with the numbering of objects.
Prepares, installs and maintains labels for exhibits and for matting display materials.
Assists with coordinating shipments and unpacks objects received and packs objects to be shipped.
Adheres to all Museum safety policies and procedures.
Maintains gallery and workroom supplies as well as supplies for installations.
Assists in producing signage and graphics as time permits.
Qualifications:
Minimum ten years’ experience in maintenance of galleries.
Bachelor’s degree in museum management or similar field desired.
Excellent supervisory, communication and interpersonal skills.
Ability to handle objects in a safe manner and to lift up to 50 lbs.
Demonstrated knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and ability to learn other programs as necessary.
Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Excellent organizational skills and ability to complete tasks and projects in a timely and accurate manner.
Ability to travel as needed.
