NATURE OF WORK:
Performs skilled and semi-skilled work in the fabrication, installation, replacement, and repair of museum exhibits.
Position involves competing demands, performing multiple tasks, working to deadlines, occasional work beyond normal business hours, and responding to customer issues. Position is subject to drug testing in accordance with applicable State and Federal regulations and City of Las Cruces policies.
Work is performed in a work shop environment and in museum facilities with frequent exposure to electrical hazards and various chemicals, fumes, dust, and debris related to the functions of the position; exposure to all weather and traffic conditions when traveling to other worksites or facilities. Medium physical demands; frequent and prolonged periods of standing, sitting bending, stooping, reaching, stepping up on stools, climbing ladders, working at heights on ladders and lifts, pushing and pulling shipping/packing crates and carrying art materials, supplies, art work, and artifacts weighing up to fifty (50) pounds.
FIRST CONSIDERATION MAY BE GIVEN TO CURRENT CITY OF LAS CRUCES EMPLOYEES WHO MEET THE MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Demonstrates proficiency in performing functions related to carpentry, mechanical, masonry, painting and electrical tasks; provides graphic designs for exhibitions and exhibition marketing to accomplish project objectives.
• Mounts, mats, and frames photographs, prints, drawings and paintings to display and illuminate artwork and exhibits according to prescribed methods, techniques, and direction.
• Operates various hand and power tools to perform required tasks in completing assigned projects; identifies material and equipment needs for assigned projects to assure necessary materials and supplies are available or purchased; resolves various issues and inquiries as authorized and in accordance with established policies and procedures.
• Utilizes specialized computer software, operates large format printer, vinyl plotter and/or laminator in the design and production of graphics for assigned projects.
• Creates and maintains records, processes various transactions, and work orders, completes necessary forms, prepares and presents various special and recurring reports as required or requested to provide consistent and accurate information.
• Maintains order and cleanliness of work areas to promote safe work environments free of debris and hazards; disposes of all materials in accordance with established policies, procedures, regulations, and safety standards.
• Monitors and inspects facilities and buildings for unsafe conditions to report on safety conditions and security issues.
• May assist with updating and maintaining information on the museum web pages.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelor’s degree in Museum Studies, Studio Art, Graphic or Industrial Design or related field, and three (3) years of experience in exhibit design, preparation, installation and fabrication or related areas which may include demonstrated experience in cabinetmaking, computer aided drafting, and graphic arts experience. A combination of education, experience, and training may be applied in accordance with City of Las Cruces policy.
Valid driver’s license is required. Position requires an acceptable driving record in accordance with City of Las Cruces policy.

General knowledge of: methods, practices, procedures, and techniques involved in the design, fabrication, installation, replacement, and repair of museum exhibits; applicable codes, rules, regulations, and policies related to the functions of the position; occupational and environmental safety and health hazards, and safety practices; safe and appropriate treatment and installation artwork and exhibit items; of safe and effective use of related chemicals, supplies, materials, tools and equipment; principles, techniques and practices of effective customer service; basic principles of record keeping and records management; business and personal computers, and applicable software applications; City organization, operations, policies and procedures to effectively perform the required functions and duties of the position.
Ability to: perform a variety of duties and responsibilities timely and with accuracy to meet deadlines and to ensure achievement of goals and objectives; read, interpret, comprehend and ensure compliance with policies, procedures, specifications, rules, and regulations governing related activities, programs, and functions; safely operate associated hand and power tools, equipment and motor vehicles; detect needed repairs and make necessary adjustments; navigate across even and uneven surfaces; communicate appropriately and effectively orally and in writing; research and compile applicable information and maintain accurate records; establish and maintain effective and appropriate working relationships with employees and the public; use initiative and independent judgment within established procedural guidelines to successfully meet established goals and objectives.
Skills in: performing functions related to general maintenance, carpentry, mechanical, masonry, painting and electrical tasks; safe and appropriate treatment and installation artwork and exhibit items; operating tools and equipment and a personal computer with installed generic and specialized software which may include graphic design and desktop publishing programs; analyzing issues, evaluating alternatives, and making logical recommendations based on findings to address issues and/or improve services, procedures, and methods; researching, interpreting and communicating regulations and technical procedures and information; using independent judgment and personal initiative; maintaining complete and accurate records; assessing and prioritizing multiple tasks, projects and demands; interpreting technical instructions and analyzing variables.
