Job Title: Art Handler
Department: Museum
Job Reports To: Manager of Art Handling
Job Summary
The art handler, whose immediate supervisor is the Manager of Art Handling, is responsible for the overall safe and efficient internal movement, housing, and installation of collections and loan objects working collaboratively with Collections staff or designated associate.
Education: Four-year college art/history education preferred.
Experience: At least three years experience within a professional arts or historical organization, with two full years art handling experience; basic knowledge of hand tools and math skills a must; a working knowledge of the Museum Systems (TMS) software; previous work history in a non-profit preferred. Basic electrical or woodworking skills a plus.
Essential Job Duties
· Install and de-install objects for exhibition.
· Prepare and pack objects for archival storage and safe transit.
· Load and unload artwork on trucks.
· As needed, work off-site at warehouses or at premises of borrowers or lenders.
· Perform matting and framing of works on paper and manuscripts as needed.
· Perform, on a daily basis, visual inspection and maintenance of exhibition galleries and storage areas and report any irregularities to supervisor; replace non-working lamps in closed-storage areas.
· Record changes of location for objects in storage and exhibition.
· Mount and install exhibition labels.
· Maintain inventory of tools, equipment, and supplies for exhibit preparation and collections maintenance; submit requests for supplies and materials as needed to supervisor.
· Perform other duties as requested.
Additional Responsibilities
Make structural and other repairs on collection frames.
Essential Physical Functions
Must be able to lift at least 50 lbs
Equipment Used
Hand tools, matt cutter, pallet jack, painting carts, rolling racks, and platform lift
Additional Comments
Occasional overtime should be expected.
