A cornerstone of the West Kowloon Cultural District, M+ is Hong Kong’s new museum for visual culture, encompassing twentieth and twenty-first century art, design and architecture, and moving image from Hong Kong, China, Asia, and beyond.
Since 2012, M+ has been presenting diverse public programmes and exhibitions, and is amassing a permanent collection, in the run-up to the scheduled 2019 public opening of the museum building designed by Herzog & de Meuron with TFP Farrells and Ove Arup & Partners HK.
The M+ Pavilion, the first permanent building to be completed in WKCD, will serve as the venue for the exhibitions organised by M+ in the run up to the completion of the main M+ building in 2019.
As a key member of the M+ team, the Senior Manager, Installations and Displays will play a critical role in the exhibition activities currently held at the M+ Pavilion and at the future M+ building. The appointee will be responsible for leading M+ exhibition and displays technical team towards achieving international museum standards with regard to the safe handling and movement of artwork as well as the installation and maintenance of the galleries and collection spaces.

You will be responsible for:


managing art movement, including handling, packing and unpacking as well as exhibition installations and de-installations;

developing and implementing procedures and guidelines for the safe handling and movement of all objects in the collection and incoming / outgoing loans;

working in partnership with Curators, Conservators and Registrars to prepare collection and non-collection materials for exhibition installation and display, travel and storage;

collaborating with exhibitions team to plan, design and implement exhibitions and providing expert support on all technical aspects;

managing permanent and contract art handlers and exhibition technicians ensuring compliance with best-practice guidelines;

managing and supervising the construction of any mounts and temporary structures related to object displays;

assisting in the design and development of all museum technical operation related areas in the M+ Building;

travelling as a courier from time to time for loans, exhibitions, or special packing / unpacking, installation / de-installation projects if required;

collaborating with other departments on establishing adequate policies, protocols and procedures; and

liaising with Building Services team to ensure adequate maintenance of the galleries at all times.


You should:


possess a recognised university degree in art, design, museum studies or related field;

have at least 10 years of working experience in art handling and exhibitions installation in a museum environment with preferably 5 years in a supervisory role and proven management skills;

have experience in all aspects of art installation including large-scale artwork, A/V and multi-media installations, and preferably have experience in gallery lighting;

have proven experience in purchasing and maintaining art handling tools and equipment;

have the ability to use various hand tools and equipment including fork and scissors lifts. Rigging experience would be desirable;

have strong organizational and problem-solving skills and be patience and detail-oriented;

be able to work effectively in a team setting and to lead a crew;

have good computer skills preferably with good knowledge of computerized collection management databases;

preferably have the general knowledge of / interest in visual culture, contemporary art, design and architecture and / or moving image;

have excellent oral and written communication skills in English and preferably in Chinese; and

be required to work in off hours, weekend and public holiday from time to time as deemed necessary.
