Job Description
· Assist the Registrar in the activities related to the care and documentation of the museum´s collection and objects on loan. Activities include cataloguing, art handling, exhibit support, preventative conservation care, and records management.
· Assist with cataloguing of the collection, including composing concise descriptions of objects for database, measuring and photographing artwork, determining materials/media, and selecting appropriate storage location.
· Maintain working knowledge of systems used to classify collection objects (e.g., Getty Union List of Artist Names, Thesaurus of Geographic Names, Thesaurus for Graphic Materials, etc.)
· Work daily with museum’s collections management system, ARGUS.net. Perform data entry, checking for data validity and error-trapping.
· Conduct object research.
· Assists with the care and use of the collections by ensuring proper storage and handling.
· Assist with photography of collection objects – including processing and editing images. Handle requests for images or information regarding collection.
· Work on conversion of older images or paper-based records to more easily searched electronic format.
· Implement integrated pest management and housekeeping plans with regard to collections.
· Work with curatorial, education and preparatory staff on exhibits as requested.
· Provide access to collections, as approved by Registrar and museum policy, for members of MU community and external partners. Work in particular with students and faculty needing access to collections for coursework or research and with museum’s academic coordinator.
· Prepare reports on collection as requested.
· Assist with development of online resources related to the collection.
· Assist with transfer, reorganization and re-housing of collection items as requested. Make recommendations on storage organization and planning to improve care of collection and/or usage of space.
· Assist with periodic inventories of the collection (according to set policy and procedure), and other collection documentation projects as assigned.
Salary
$13.27 –$15.19 per hour
Shift
8:00 am – 5:00 Pm M-F
Minimum Qualifications
A high school diploma and at least 2 years of experience from which comparable knowledge and skills can be acquired is necessary.
Preferred Qualifications
– At least one (1) year experience in a similar environment (art/art history museum)
– MA or MFA in Art, Art History, Museum Studies or related field
– Knowledge of museum registration methods, collections care and art handling
– Some experience with studio photography techniques
– Knowledge of best practices relating to museum collections
– Knowledge of and experience with collections management database systems.
– Knowledge of Adobe Photoshop
– Self-starter with the ability to work independently as well as in a team environment
-- Ability to lift up to 40 pounds occasionally.
-- Ability to stand for long periods of time, to reach.
