The Williams College Museum of Art (WCMA), one of the leading college art museums in the country, is seeking applicants for a highly skilled Chief Preparator with management and design experience. The successful candidate will be well-versed in best museum art-handling practices, an organized team leader, and a creative problem-solver with an eye for detail.

Reporting to the Deputy Director for Curatorial Affairs, the Chief Preparator is a critical member of a collaborative staff charged with producing the museum's ambitious exhibition program at a high level within the allotted budget, space and time. The Chief Preparator leads and manages the preparation department of two experienced full-time preparators and additional temporary art handlers. The Chief Preparator is also responsible for managing the storage, care, and handling of the museum's collections, and oversight of preparation areas.

It is a vital hub for deep student learning and participation; for taking risks and testing creative, future forms of scholarship and teaching; and for boldly affirming the relevance of the history of art and the arts broadly.

Primary Responsibilities:

Oversee full-time crew of two, plus additional temporary employees as needed, working on all aspects of installation including graphics, display, lighting, painting, art handling, framing, art preparation, and program set up
Lead, supervise and manage preparation department staff by setting and communicating departmental goals and priorities and ensuring the efficient execution of the tasks and projects outlined in the priorities
In collaboration with Exhibition Manager plan and implement work schedules that are efficient as well as responsive and flexible
Creatively design exhibitions in collaboration with curators, project managers, and artists, including researching themes, developing floorplans, producing maquettes, implementing layout, graphics, color, lighting and AV plans
Analyze and problem solve installation challenges in advance and on the spot
In consultation with curators and registrars maintain order and the highest safety standards for works of art housed in multiple storages
Prepare works for conservation, shipping, and exhibition
Ensure mat room, loading dock and related areas are maintained, organized and safe environments for artwork and staff
In close collaboration with museum colleagues and those in campus facilities, ensure that gallery spaces and are properly maintained, safe for art work, and up to highest standards of visitor experience


Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree or equivalent and at least 8 years of art handling experience
Significant experience with and understanding of best museum practices in art handling and installation
Design and experience using CAD programs
Significant experience with Audio/Visual installation
Basic computer office skills-Excel, Word, Gmail and Google Calendar/Drive
Effective communication-to a wide variety of individuals via email, phone, and in person
Understanding of and experience in basic carpentry and construction
Experience managing others and working collaboratively
Experience with project management, planning and problem-solving
