The National Museum of Health and Medicine (NMHM) inspires interest in and promotes understanding of medicine with a special emphasis on American military medicine. A MUSEUM TECHNICIAN, who will support the general collection of the museum, is sought for this National Historic Landmark. The Collections staff of the NMHM preserves materials representing key subject areas in the history and practice of American medicine, military medicine, and modern medical and health issues and research. Overall, the responsibilities of the staff are to (1) provide the highest level of professional care to the NMHM collections and their associated documentation; (2) collect objects, specimens, and related archival materials deemed significant and relevant to the mission of the NMHM and according to NMHM policies and procedures for review; and (3) support research through access to collections per NMHM policy and procedure.
Major Duties/Responsibilities:
Activities include the following but are not limited to:


Provide General collection management support to the NMHM, including the physical maintenance of the collections.
Assist in day-to-day collections management projects and special projects.
Conduct inventory, cataloging and organization of museum objects, specimens, and archives in accordance with best practice museum standards of care.
Assist in preservation and maintenance activities for a range of archival and object types, such as glass, paper, artifacts, skeletal, and wet tissue collections.
Assist in fulfilling research requests for inventories, data and images.
Assist researchers in accessing materials, setting up equipment, and facilitating use of collections materials.
Support other elements of the museum.

RequirementsQualifications:


Possess, at a minimum, a Bachelor's degree in museum studies, library science, biology, physical anthropology, or history. Master's degree in one of these disciplines is desired.
Two (2) years relevant collections management experience.
Demonstrate responsibility for historically, scientifically, and monetarily valuable collections.
Excellent oral and written communications skills.
Skill with collections management databases, such as Ke EMu, desired.
Requires ability to generate credible finding aids and work in support of the Registrar and general collections management.
Must be able to meet and maintain occupational health clearance for use of a respirator and work within a BSL-2 environment.
Requires ability to work in confined collections storage areas, climb ladders and use basic materials handling equipment. Ability to lift safely supplies and museum objects also required.
