The Exhibit Specialist, Senior (Preparator) is a classified staff position in the Community Engagement Division of the Arizona State Museum (ASM). The incumbent works with ASM's Head of Community Engagement, exhibit designers, graphic designers, curators, conservators, other ASM staff, and outside contractors to build, install and de-install exhibits. The incumbent is responsible for building exhibit components, making mounts, installing artifacts and art works, printing and mounting panels and labels, and preparing and maintaining exhibit galleries, public spaces, workspaces and equipment. The Exhibit Specialist, Senior (Preparator) reports to the Head of Community Engagement.
Work will be conducted in fabrication workshop and in the museum's galleries. The incumbent will be exposed to power tools, paint vapors, saw dust, noise, and may experience exposure to mechanical, electrical and chemical factors. Must be able to stand and walk for long periods of time, be able to work on ladders and at heights up to 30 feet, and be able to lift 75 pounds. There is occasional travel to vendor sites or off-site exhibit locations.

Duties & Responsibilities
Exhibit planning and preparation:
Participates in concept design meetings.
Helps with materials research and time and cost estimates for various jobs.
Collaborates with the Exhibit Specialist Senior (Exhibit Designer) on design of exhibit components.
Works with graphic designers on preparation of labels and panels and other graphic components of exhibits.
Collaborates with members of museum divisions including conservation, collections, exhibits, education, and research.
Exhibit fabrication and installation:
Constructs, installs and de-installs temporary and permanent exhibits. Tasks may include protecting floors and surfaces; patching and painting walls; ordering of related supplies and materials; packing and unpacking exhibit components; handling museum objects; adjusting lighting; installing cases, exhibit graphics, and labels; creating or modifying mounts and fixtures; and supporting multi-media components.
Fabricates exhibit furniture, pedestals, vitrines, platforms, reading rails, hands-on interactives, and other exhibit components; may design and fabricate exhibit crates.
Fabricates, prints, and mounts exhibit labels, panels, and signs.
Prepares artifacts for exhibition using established art handling guidelines.
Fabricates mounts for 3D objects, in coordination with museum curators and conservators, using current best practices to safeguard the objects.
Prepares 2D artifacts for exhibition via matting, mounting, and framing, in coordination with museum curators and conservators, using current best practices to safeguard the objects.
Ensures that appropriate safety precautions are adhered to and that exhibit shop, fabrication, and installation meet University standards and applicable regulations.
Exhibit Maintenance:
Performs regular inspection, maintenance and repairs of all exhibits; includes cleaning, lighting, paint, multi-media components, cases, Plexiglas/glass, etc.
Keeps all exhibit-related equipment in good working order.
Other Duties:
Maintains orderly workshop and storage spaces.
Maintains accurate inventory of all equipment assigned to the exhibit shop, cases, and other Exhibits Section resources.
Researches, recommends, orders and purchases equipment and supplies, as needed, for projects, according to University of Arizona purchasing procedures.
Assists with coordination of temporary assistants, students, and volunteers as needed; may include training and supervising students working on exhibit projects.
Supports public programs when assigned.
Serves on departmental committees as assigned.
Attends Community Engagement Division meetings.
Additional duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
Advanced level shop and woodworking/carpentry finishing skills
Welding, metal working, including experience with brass and steel
Cutting glass, wood, Gator Board and foamcore
Fabricating with Plexiglas, including cutting, bending, and adhereing
Painting
Knowledge of MS Office suite, Adobe Creative Suite, email and web applications
Creative problem solving
Attention to detail
Excellent project management and organizational skills
Excellent interpersonal and communications skills applicable to a deadline-oriented, creative, and academic atmosphere

Arizona driver's license with the ability to drive according to the University Fleet Safety Policy (http://risk.arizona.edu/sites/risk/files/fleetsafetypolicy.pdf).Arizona Board of Regents Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Museum Studies or related field AND two years experience in design and building trades or exhibit design and construction; OR, six years experience in design and building trades which includes two years experience in exhibit design and construction; OR, any equivalent combination of experience, training and/or education.
Preferred Qualifications
This position has the possibility to be converted to a 1.0 should the selected individual possess the following:
Experience working from scaled drawings
Experience working with museum artifacts including 3-D and 2-D objects, and knowledge of proper handling techniques
Experience working in a museum.
Experience in fabrication of exhibit furniture, theater set fabrication, or finish cabinetry
Experience in matting and framing
Knowledge of lighting techniques
Experience creating scaled drawings using AutoCAD, Adobe Creative Suite applications, Revit, or other software
2 years minimum experience in making object mounts for museums or galleries and handling of art objects
AB and/or BA degree in fine arts, studio arts, industrial arts, theater design, architecture, or museum studies.
