OVERVIEW: The Senior Exhibit Designer is responsible for the design and production plans of thematic and/or environmental designs based on project team concepts for The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis. Typical projects will range from 5,000 to 10,000+ square foot exhibit environments with production budgets ranging from $50 to $600 per square foot. The incumbent collaborates with internal and external project teams. He/she participates in brainstorming, as well as research and conceptual development of innovative, entertaining educational quality exhibits and environments for children and families that drive new and repeat visitation. The Senior Designer develops and communicates visual concepts and design solutions on time. The incumbent participates in formative testing and prototyping to assure design appropriateness.
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:


Participates in the brainstorming, research and development of concepts for projects led by project managers, producing quick conceptual sketches illustrating and summarizing the ideas being discussed.
Engages in the production of conceptual and presentation drawings which accurately represent concepts developed, as well as accurate size and space proportions and considerations for ergonomic design for children and families.Responsible for the production of presentation floorplans indicating recommendations for appropriate space allocations. Makes verbal presentations of conceptual drawings describing concepts represented in drawings.
Working with technical staff, development of informed recommendations for use of theatrical and other special effects, including specialty lighting and sound technologies, multimedia presentations, and artifact display.
Develops ballpark budget estimates simultaneously with conceptual designs.Develops conceptual designs in coordination with available production budgets and timelines.
Produces conceptual drawings containing adequate information for subsequent fabrication and engineering drawings to be produced by others, and demonstrating a working knowledge of production processes and information needed by production technicians to carry conceptual designs into production stages, including, but not limited to: identification of fabrication methods, accurate dimensions and proportions, color selections,materials and surfaces, specifications of specialized equipment and elements.
Is involved in, and oversees design refinements, in collaboration with internal colleagues and external contractors, continuing through completion of production phases as needed.
Produces conceptual designs and drawings done on computer, drawing board and in quick sketch formats as appropriate. Produces three dimensional scale models of major conceptual designs.



RequirementsREQUIREMENTS:


Bachelor’s degree and six years of experience in three dimensional design including experience in museums and in related fields such as theme parks, theater or themed retail.
Ability to easily generate and communicate innovative verbal and visual ideas in artistic styles appropriate for children and family audiences.
Demonstrated proficiency with Adobe Creative Suite. Experience with Sketchup and/or other 3D drafting program preferred.
Strong interpersonal skills and an ability to work effectively on a team in a people oriented, changing, flexible environment.Ability to manage multiple priorities and work on multiple projects simultaneously.
Working knowledge of production processes to carry conceptual designs into production stages, including, but not limited to: identification of fabrication methods, accurate dimensions and proportions, color selections, materials and surfaces, specifications of specialized equipment and elements.Knowledge of and ability to develop designs that meet production budget and timeline criteria.

Candidates who are selected must present a portfolio of materials and references during interviews with staff. Must provide some representative examples of work that may be retained by The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis, such as digital prints, paper prints or copies, tearsheets, etc.

ADA REQUIREMENTS:


Must be able to view computer monitor, review detailed drawings/proposals/contracts, and reports.Must also be able to identify staff, visitors and other meeting participants.
Must be able to communicate by telephone, in face-to-face meetings and in public presentations.
Requires extensive computer keyboarding and calculator use and heavy paperwork processing.
Requires the ability to negotiate throughout the museum and must be able to sit or stand for extended periods of time; must be able to lift 40lbs and tolerate dust in the environment.
Must be able to negotiate local, regional, national and international travel.
