This is an exciting time for Cape Fear Museum of History and Science. We are seeking a Manager of Collections and Exhibits to be part of our growing organization to help guide the implementation of our newly adopted strategic plan. This is a unique opportunity for an imaginative, creative, and experienced museum leader who will be working on innovative concepts with an exceptional team.
The successful candidate will oversee the management of the Museum's collections, exhibits, research, and facilities and the supervision of staff assigned to accomplish the mission of the Exhibit and Collections Units. The Manager will also oversee and implement initiatives developed as part of a recently-completed strategic plan to better serve existing and new audiences in the museum and the community. Project initiatives will include building and exhibit renovations and the development of pop-up exhibits and digital collections. Essential to the position is an adherence to the highest museum standards and best practices, and the ability to work collaboratively and to contribute meaningfully to the museum's strategic plans and overall mission.
Cape Fear Museum collects, preserves and interprets objects relating to the history, science, and cultures of the Lower Cape Fear. The Museum makes those objects and their interpretation available to the public through educational exhibitions and programs. Cape Fear Museum is a department of New Hanover County.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
Provides leadership for the Collections and Exhibits Units by developing long-range goals, planning budgets to accomplish goals, monitoring budgets to ensure sound fiscal management, communicating budget concerns to the Director, and serving as the spokesperson to represent the units' needs, concerns, or issues.
Supervises Collections and Exhibit Units to include prioritizing and assigning work, conducting performance evaluations, and ensuring staff is trained.
Oversees the exhibit planning process and guides the team in the production and installation of temporary, permanent and traveling exhibitions.
Defines and delivers a strategy to build, enhance and expand the Museum's collection and develops a comprehensive plan for collecting in the future
Coordinates facilities maintenance operations with the County's Property Management Department and unit staff. Manages strategic initiatives and activities related to maintaining the facility's appearance, operations, use and building safety.
Collaborates with other Museum units to develop exhibits and programs that meets the Museum's mission for the general public.
Works with donors, scholars, and colleagues both internally and externally and facilitates partnerships with other institutions to promote research, understanding, and use of the collection and the Museum's resources.
Recommends, writes, reviews, and administers grants supporting exhibit development and collections management; identifies and helps to cultivate private support for exhibit development and collections management.
Attends relevant public events, represents the museum in radio, television, and various public speaking forums, and maintains professional connections with the community.
Develops, implements, and maintains policies governing disaster preparedness and response as it relates to the collection and facility and ensure staff are trained.
Acts as Museum Director when assigned and provides competent leadership in both routine and emergency situations. Assigned regular rotation as manager-on-call.
Performs other duties of a similar nature or level.
Performs work during emergency/disaster situations.
COMPENSATION:
The current salary range for this position is $61,910.00-$105,247.
The hiring range for this position is $61,910- $83,579. Salary is negotiable within the hiring range, depending on qualifications.

RequirementsMINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelor's degree required. Master's degree preferred in Museum Studies, Administration, Management or a related academic discipline in history or science. A minimum of seven years of progressively responsible experience in supervision, project management, collections management and exhibit development with a thorough understanding of related practices and principles or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above.
