Director of Collections Description:
The Eiteljorg Museum of American Indians & Western Art is accepting resumes for the position of Director of Museum Collections. This position leads our collections department with core responsibilities for shipping and receiving, insurance, storage, conservation activities, database management, and exhibit installation and de-installation. They supervise collections staff including the registrar, collections assistant, interns and contractors and work closely with our curatorial, facilities, and other departments to ensure effective environmental monitoring and the stability and overall safety and security of our collection.
Qualifications include a BA in art history, anthropology or related field, an MA in museum studies or a related field with concentration or emphasis on collections management, five to seven years’ collection management experience, thorough knowledge of collections management software necessary (TMS) and thorough knowledge of collections management policies, procedures and related issues of insurance, shipping, NAGPRA procedures, grant writing for the support of collections needs, etc. Familiarity with Western American art and Native American art and culture is beneficial.
The Eiteljorg Museum is a healthy AAM accredited institution located in the vibrant downtown Indianapolis White River State Park. Our collections and exhibitions are primarily built around traditional art of the American West, contemporary art of the West, and traditional and contemporary objects and artworks of Native peoples of North America. The museum has just begun a new five-year strategic plan with a focus upon building the endowment, reinstallation of core galleries, and addressing issues of diversity in our subject matter and serving a diverse audience. The selective collection consists of about 9,000 items. The director of museum collections plays a critical role in management of collections and the facility and activities that can affect collections.
