Archival Collections Manager

We are pleased to announce an opening for a full-time, two-year term appointment of an Archival Collections Manager for the Museum of Danish America. We are looking for a personable, organized, and detail-oriented individual to combine archival materials currently housed in two separate collections. The Curatorial Department's Archival Collection and the Genealogy Center Special Collections have been developed and used separately from one another for 20 years. Because of overlapping interests, duplicate materials, and a need for efficiency and consistency, these collections will be combined. The perfect position for an early career professional looking for a place to gain valuable experience, manage an important project and have fun with a fantastic group of colleagues.
Compensation
ˇ Full-time; $32,000 annual salary
ˇ Benefits: vacation and sick leave; health insurance
Proposed starting Date: September 2017
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
ˇ While combining archival collections, reappraise, process, and rehouse these materials
ˇ Process collections into PastPerfect (tm), the collections database used by the Museum
ˇ Create finding aids for the combined collections
ˇ Working with the Curator of Collections/Registrar, the Genealogy Center Manager and the Executive Director, the Archival Collections Manager will develop standards for processing materials for the consolidated collection
* Participate in the Collections Review Committee
* Seek advice from partners at the Danish Immigrant Archive (DIA) at Grand View University in Des Moines, IA and the Danish American Archive and Library (DAAL) in Blair, NE on archival processing standards and project planning
* Outreach through contributions to the Museum's newsletter America Letter, articles to Bien, The Bridge, Den Danske Pioneer, and participation in Museum events and activities
ˇ Communicate regularly with the Curator of Collections/Registrar and Genealogy Center Manager, as well as other staff, as to the progress of the project
ˇ Serve as ex-officio member of the Board of Director's Collections Committee and Genealogy Center Committee
ˇ Other duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications
ˇ Masters-level degree from an accredited college or university in archives and records management, library science, museum studies, history, or a related field, or equivalent combination of education and work experience.
ˇ Strong written and oral communication skills, including
o reading and analyzing materials in the archival collections, and creating finding aids;
o communicating with Danish interns and others with language skills to identify the scope of Danish-language materials;
o presenting information effectively to colleagues, public groups, and the Board of Directors as needed
ˇ Ability to work independently and in team settings
ˇ Ability to bend and lift/carry up to 40 lbs.
Desirable Qualifications
Special attention will be given to applicants having the following qualifications:
ˇ Familiarity with PastPerfect (tm) museum software
* Previous experience in archival best practices, EAD and handling various material types
ˇ Proficiency in Danish or another Scandinavian language
