JOB TITLE: REGISTRAR
JOB LOCATION: Balboa Park, 1439 El Prado, San Diego, CA 92101
POSITION TYPE: Full-time, Non-exempt
GENERAL:
Mingei International Museum is hiring a full-time Registrar. The position is primarily responsible for managing the processes of receiving, shipping, securing, cataloguing, caring for and maintaining art works and records for exhibition loans to and from the Museum. The successful candidate will work with the Senior Manager of Collections and Registration to process new acquisitions, both donations and purchases, into the permanent collection, as well as assist with inventory and deaccessioning as needed. S/he will help review and propose necessary changes to policies and procedures established by the Museum from time to time to meet accreditation requirements for the AAM and assist the Museum in achieving best practices in the area of registration. The position will help supervise registration interns and volunteers; assist photographers, guest curators and curatorial consultants; assist with installation of Museum exhibitions and work with the Collections Committee; perform other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
• Understanding and appreciation of Mingei’s mission and goals
• At least three years’ experience working with a collection or exhibitions in an equivalent museum
• Demonstrated organizational, planning and project management skills with exceptional attention to detail and ability to communicate with a small team
• National and international art shipping and logistics experience
• Ability to plan, problem-solve and to work independently and collaboratively within and across deparments
• Demonstrated oral and written communications skills
• Physical ability to reach, bend, stoop, lift and move file boxes, pedestals, etc. up to 25 pounds on a regular basis
• Familiarity with computers including EmbARK or equivalent collections management system, Word and Excel
• Flexibility, tact, diplomacy and ability to interact well with Museum members, volunteers, staff, visitors and the public
• Valid CA driver’s license and experience driving a Sprinter van
• Experience managing digitization and on-line collections highly desirable
EDUCATION: BA or MA in art history, museum studies, or a museum-related field
