As the creative and visionary voice of our exhibitions program and professional steward of our permanent collection, you will work closely with the Executive Director and key programmatic staff directing all aspects of our annual exhibitions program and best practives stewardship of our permanent collection. As Stamford Connecticut's art museum, set in an expansive nature center with a working farm, our exhibition thematic focus includes a pallet of fine art, popular and contemporary culture, natural history, agriculture, science, history and astronomy targeted to family audiences and varied interests. You will be the creative, visionary thinker for our Salon Series of Cultural & Social programming for targeted adult audiences. You will coordinate guest curators and speakers, serve as our spokesperson on the interpretation of our exhibitions and collections to the media and general public and you will be responsible for the overall care and management of our collections, including documentation, safe keeping, storage, handling, conservation and interpretation. You will research topics, define themes, identify supporting materials, create checklists and draft interpretive texts and labels. You will manage and envision all installations. This position reports to our Executive Director & CEO.
RequirementsFive years relevant, professional, curatorial & collections experience, preferably in the museum field. Minimum B.A. in art history, anthropology, archeology, museum or cultural studies. MA preferred with expertise in exhibition development and collections management and stewardship. Must possess a maturity level to have professional, respectful demeanor with Board, major donors, and other key business contacts acting with discretion and a keen understanding of confidentiality. This position requires polish, excellent communications skills, oral and written as well as the ability to multitask and think creatively of programs that appeal to our multi-generational audiences. Must have a good understanding of issues of strategic planning and policy implementation. Must have excellent research skills, be flexible enough to interact across departments at all levels, must be able to lift 50 lbs, bend, stretch, stand for extended periods of time, climb stairs, reach, twist, sit, walk and/or run. This position integrates into a leadership team and requires excellent team work and support of colleagues and institutional initiatives. This position may lead Task Forces or programmatic initiatives and perform other duties as assigned. Night and weekend work will be required to support our programs and events.
