COLLECTIONS TECHNICIAN

Reports To: Manager of Preservation Initiatives
Basic Work Week: 37.5 hours per week, M-F.
OVERVIEW
The Collections Technician serves the IMA at Newfield’s permanent collection through the creation of safe storage systems and the maintenance of its dedicated art storage areas. They will assist other collections staff and departments in tasks directly related to and for the benefit of the Collection as detailed in the Job Description. The Collections Technician must be comfortable working in solitude but also be able to work successfully within a team environment.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
• Manage the safety, organization and preservation of the stored museum collection and artworks according to AAM, AAMD and museum industry standards / preventative conservation standards and applicable museum policies
• Support an ongoing reorganization of artworks and storage spaces to accommodate a growing, diverse museum collection
• Design, fabricate and maintain a variety of custom storage mounts and/or containers, following museum best practices often in collaboration with other collections staff
• Application of accession numbers to objects, following approved methods
• Processing new acquisitions into the collection while providing proper storage and housing
• To initiate and complete inventory projects with other collections staff, interns or volunteers; Locate and/or resolve unidentified or misplaced works of art in the collection storage areas
• Archival framing, matting and hinging of works on paper
• Support art storage areas and functions by way of general inspections and cleaning of spaces, archival material inventory and purchases; Observe and report when necessary on any condition of concern within the Museums dedicated art storage spaces including environmental, safety and the security of the collection at all times
• Record, update and/or enter information specific to collection storage such as location changes, inventories and accession number locations, using Ke EMu database software
• Relocation of artwork throughout the museum and campus
• Assign permanent locations for objects within storage areas
• Supervise or direct work-study, interns, volunteers, and other staff working within storage
• Assist in Integrated Pest Management initiatives
• Foster a cooperative work environment by actively participating in team projects and working cross-departmentally in collaboration with other staff
• Demonstrate accuracy and thoroughness with an attention to details
• The Collections Technician will be expected to be an important member of any disaster mitigation team assembled in the event of an emergency

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
Bachelor’s degree in fine art or related field and three to five years related experience and/or training, or equivalent combination of education and experience
OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Construction skills with woodworking tools, sealant application, and related safety procedures; Knowledge of basic art history and media, art conservation skills, including archival framing, art handling procedures and best practices, and knowledge of operation requirements for transport equipment; Basic housekeeping knowledge and skills; Knowledge of computerized information systems used in office systems; Valid Indiana Driver's license. Ability to occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
