The Heinz History Center, an affiliate of the Smithsonian Institution and the largest history museum in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, seeks an experienced Exhibit Designer to join our Exhibit team. The Exhibit Designer is responsible for exhibition and graphic design projects as assigned at the History Center, Meadowcroft, & Fort Pitt Museum. The Exhibit Designer cooperates with curators as well as the departments and staff responsible for fabricating, installing, lighting, maintaining, de-installing and recycling exhibitions. The Exhibit Designer assist the Vice President Museum Administration and Design Director with design matters to ensure uniformly high-quality workmanship and consistency in branding, exhibitions and graphic design. The Exhibit Designer advises on the use of outside installation and fabrication contractors and crews and serves as key member of the exhibition project team. We are seeking a designer with stylistic range–someone who can embrace the look of pre-war, mid-century and retro eighties and merge them with current trends. We are storytellers and you must enjoy contributing to the overall creative vision of a project.
The History Center maintains an aggressive exhibit schedule (multiple museums, multiple exhibits per year ranging from 1000 to 10000 square feet) and offers the opportunity to work with an award winning exhibit team of curators, designers, and production specialists. A willingness to explore a variety of mediums (print, sound, video, web/interactive, etc.) and manage multiple projects, deadlines, and budgets desirable.
This is a Full-time position reporting to the Vice President Museum Administration


RequirementsCandidates must be able to bring design ideas from concept through to production with limited supervision. The ability to manage the exhibit design process, specify production materials and a willingness to explore new ideas is required.
B.A. or B.S. in architecture or design with a minimum three years experience in exhibit design and project management.
