The Shawnee Tribe Cultural Center in Miami, OK seeks an Exhibit and Program Manager to be a part of an outstanding team to create collaborative and interactive exhibits and programs. SUMMARY OF RESPONSIBILITIES
The Exhibit and Program Manager overseas the creation of exhibits, assisting with programs that serve the Center’s mission and coordinate with exhibits. This position oversees both daily and long-range exhibit development including design, fabrication, installation, maintenance, safety, and documentation.
The Manager must be creative and enjoy working in a small, entrepreneurial environment that is mission-driven, results-oriented, fast-paced, and community focused. The ideal candidate can exercise good judgment in a variety of situations, with strong written and verbal communication, administrative, and organizational skills, and the ability to maintain a realistic balance of multiple priorities. The Manager works independently and as part of a small team and must be able to work under pressure at times to handle a wide variety of activities.
ESSENTIAL POSITION FUNCTIONS
Manage and maintain exhibits according to established best practices, including planning, budget development, scheduling, fabrication, installation, marketing and reporting.
Develop, implement, and maintain exhibit and program policies and procedures.
Ensure compliance with laws pertaining to collections, such as the Native American Graves Repatriation and Protection Act, Archaeological Resources Protection Act, the Marine Mammal Protection Act, and the Migratory Bird Act.
Oversee incoming acquisitions and loans, including obtaining appropriate legal paperwork.
Participate in Advisory Committee activities.
Communicate with tribes, government agencies, lenders, artists, and stakeholders regarding exhibits.
Assist in contracting for outside services as needed, including conservation, packing, shipping, insurance, and specialty fabrication and printing.
Oversee movement, packing, and shipping of objects.
Control storage areas, overseeing integrated pest management programs, and the monitoring and analysis of environmental conditions.
Assist in facility management and reporting.
Disseminate information and provide access to exhibits as requested by researchers, students, and lenders.
Develop and review contracts, and prepare documentation for traveling exhibits or loans.
Assist in the development, coordination and implementation of programs.
Train, work with, and supervise volunteers and interns.
RequirementsREQUIRED EXPERIENCE & EDUCATION
Bachelor degree in related area preferred, a minimum of two years exhibit-related experience preferred, demonstrated working knowledge of museum practices; demonstrated understanding of basic carpentry, metal working, mount making, graphic design and the ability to use a variety of tools.
DESIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES
Demonstrated experience with and knowledge of exhibit fabrication techniques and the operations, services, and activities of an exhibits program.
Exceptional organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects.Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and Power Point) and Adobe products (Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator).
Knowledge of image rights and reproduction.
Experience working with and supervising volunteers and the ability to interact successfully with volunteers and visitors.
Good writing and communications skills.
Able to work on a flexible schedule.
Able to work with limited supervision, to begin projects independently, and to bring projects to conclusion on a timely basis.
Must have a pleasant, courteous, and professional attitude.
Adhere to appropriate standards of conduct, including confidentiality, integrity, and honesty; follows directives; work cooperatively with others; adapt positively to a changing work environment; and participate in proactive problem solving.
Knowledge or willingness to learn about Shawnee culture.
