The Art Institute of Chicago, founded in 1879, is a world-renowned art museum housing one of the largest permanent collections in the United States. An encyclopedic museum, the Art Institute collects, preserves, and interprets works in every medium from all cultures and historical periods. With a collection of approximately 300,000 art works and artifacts, the museum has particularly strong holdings in Impressionist and Post-Impressionist painting, contemporary art, early 20th century European painting and sculpture, Japanese prints, and photography. The museum’s 2009 addition, the Modern Wing, features 264,000 square feet dedicated to modern and contemporary art, photography, architecture and design, and learning and public engagement. In addition to displaying its permanent collection, the Art Institute mounts more than 30 special exhibitions per year and features lectures, gallery tours, and special performances on a daily basis.
The Executive Director of Registration and Collections oversees the management of art objects for which the Art Institute of Chicago is accountable. This includes Museum-owned objects on site and on loan, as well as objects owned by others on loan to the Art Institute of Chicago. This position is responsible for collection movement, packing, storage, contracts, insurance, documentation, and policy compliance, while finding new ways to innovate and improve upon currently-accepted best practices.
PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:


Actively manage day-to-day operations, workflow, and finances across the department.



Establish and implement revised standards and workflow for proper intake, storage, movement, shipping, and documentation of art objects, assuring the safe display of artworks.



In partnership with the Corporate Secretary, ensure compliance with institutional policies surrounding art and find areas for improvement where possible.



Direct art-related logistics, including shipping, receiving, packing, handling, installation, and tracking of objects throughout the Art Institute footprint, including off-site storage, outgoing loans, and all exhibitions.



Manage all art-related insurance, including coverage for accessioned and loaned objects; monitor and report on institutional liability associated with loaned objects.



In partnership with Project Management, curatorial, Conservation, and Legal departments, plan, budget, and coordinate art shipments for exhibitions, acquisitions, art sales, and other related activities.



Develop and execute a strategic plan for art storage, reflecting both current storage allocation and future needs related to collection growth and diversification.



Define standards for collections data within enterprise systems; create new reporting tools in collaboration with Museum Analytics and Strategy to improve reliability of collections data.



Identify opportunities to reduce complexity associated with collections management both within and beyond the department; serve as a thought partner with senior leadership.
Plan and execute periodic audits of the collection in tandem with Finance department using best practices for inventory management.



Oversee courier program to facilitate transport of high-value objects.



Collaborate with Protection Services to ensure safe and secure installation of objects.
