The Exhibition Design Technician is a full-time professional position that assumes a leadership role in the design, fabrication, installation and maintenance of permanent and temporary exhibitions. This position reports directly to the Exhibition Manager and is a key staff member in a small but dynamic curatorial team, working closely with the Curators, Preparator, and Exhibition Graphic Designer. This role requires precise attention to detail, strong communication and analytical skills, as well as the abilities to prioritize and manage multiple projects simultaneously and to work collaboratively and diplomatically.


RequirementsRole and Responsibilities
Primary responsibilities will relate to both the permanent collection and traveling exhibitions, including (but not limited to) the following:


Design and safely install visually dynamic interpretive exhibitions.



Prepare artworks for display, including matting, framing, mounting, etc.



Install or set up gallery lighting.



Check and maintain condition and lighting of galleries.



Conceptualize, design and fabricate exhibition furniture, casework, and mounts.



Prepares cost estimates for exhibition design; procures estimates for fabrication of outside design-related services.



Work with Exhibition Manager and Exhibition Graphic Designer to prepare deinstallation/installation schedule, including all related tasks and dates for exhibition team.



Participate in the development of Museum’s exhibition calendar.



Assist with packing, unpacking and building of shipping crates.



Assist with movement and storage of Collection objects.



Maintain and purchase hardware, tools, and other materials for workshop.



Work with Education staff to help maintain permanent and changing interpretive exhibits.

Requirements


BFA or BA in art, art history, museum studies, or related field required (MFA or MA preferred); experience with both 3D and 2D design.



Minimum five years’ experience working in a museum handling and installing artwork, designing exhibitions, and building exhibition furniture.



Proficiency in MS Office, Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop.



Demonstrated ability to creatively and intelligently solve complex problems.



Ability to communicate design ideas both verbally and through visual aids such as renderings or models.



Familiarity with shop and framing tools, photography, lighting, computer desktop publishing hardware and software; building construction and maintenance, mechanical maintenance and repair work.



Flexibility to travel and/or work extended hours as needed.



Ability to meet deadlines.



Ability to stand and/or work on feet for long periods, lift and carry artworks and other materials weighing up to 50 lbs.; comfortable on ladders up to 14ft. high.



Self-motivated work ethic and ability and desire to work as part of a team.
