About the Position The Rubin is looking for a strategically thinking and collaborative leader to serve as its Director of Exhibitions. The Director of Exhibitions conceives, develops, and oversees the implementation of all aspects of the exhibition program at the Rubin Museum.
The Director of Exhibitions is responsible for authoring, shaping, and imaginatively expressing the artistic program of the institution throughout our spaces. The role fosters collaboration, communication and transparency in working across departments.
The Director of Exhibitions will employ best practices consistent with design industry and international museum standards. Success factors for this role include the ability to work collaboratively across departments, superb interpersonal and negotiation skills, a creative and bold approach to the conception and development of exhibitions, the ability to think outside the box, and a willingness to take risks.
Reporting to the Executive Director the incumbent will be a key member of the Senior Leadership team.
Responsibilities:


Leads the development of our annual themes and individual programmatic expressions through exhibitions and engagement opportunities, while ascertaining that all efforts are institutionally aligned, in addition to being creative, engaging, and bold in expression.
Focuses on achieving impactful, engaging visitor experiences by creating relevant and affecting exhibitions throughout our spaces.
Fosters innovation and experimentation across departments, inviting best approaches to succeed.
Develops creative ways to utilize the collection of the museum by including multidisciplinary, cross-cultural, and contemporary means of expression
Works closely with a team of three curators, occasional guest curators, and artists.
Works effectively in consultation with all exhibition-related internal resources, such as Collection Management, Programs & Engagement, External Affairs, Finance, and Operations.
Communicates well with executive staff and others to ensure smart, unique, and bold positioning of our institutional efforts.
Prepares accurate documentation for projects and presentation materials
Originates bids, schedules and manages contracting of artists, contractors, and vendors with exhibition team.
Consistently optimizes and ensures smooth workflows for all exhibition projects, both in planning and implementation phases.
Defines and implements an evaluation system for exhibitions.
Leads and manages a team consisting of Exhibition Design, Exhibition and Installation Management, and Editorial to professionally conceive, plan, and implement projects on budget, in a timely manner.
Engages in strategic partnerships to broaden the reach of the institution
Acts as a spokesperson on behalf of the Rubin’s exhibition programs, to internal stakeholders such as staff, the board, and select committees, and external stakeholders such as donors and supporters.
Builds and administers multi-year budget projections for exhibition projects in consultation with internal stakeholders.
Performs all other duties as assigned.



RequirementsQualifications:


At least a Master’s degree in art, art history, museum studies, or related, relevant field.
3-5 years of experience in similar role.
Comprehensive knowledge of exhibition practices.
Experience in or familiarity with Asian Art preferred.
Existing broad network of peers and museum colleagues.
Proven track record of successfully developing and executing exhibitions in a supervisory role.
Strong interpersonal skills and ability to forge and lead teams successfully.
Ability to work across departments and disciplines in a highly collaborative, goal-oriented manner.
Open-minded and inviting of new ideas, authoritative and decisive when situation demands.
Superb communication skills, ability to articulate the goals of the Rubin internally and externally.
Ability to lead high-level conceptual work and take projects through the practical aspects of implementation in the galleries.
Able to prioritize and multi-task.
Organized and able to meet deadlines in a fast-paced and challenging exhibition schedule.
Ability to negotiate, resolve potential conflicts, and find creative solutions.
Knowledge of professional museum practices, including but not limited to loans, insurances, and conservation.
Solid computer skills: proficiency in Microsoft, Excel/Word/PowerPoint and Collection management software.
