Assistant Preparator


Grounds For Sculpture is seeking a part-time (25 hours per week) Assistant Preparator to join its curatorial team. The Assistant Preparator is an exciting opportunity to contribute to the development and expansion of garden and gallery based experiences serving a wide array of Grounds For Sculpture visitors.

The Assistant Preparator will complete a range of duties related to the function of the curatorial department. The primary responsibility will be to assist with the installations and maintain the display of both indoor and outdoor exhibitions and collections to the highest standards. This position requires some prior knowledge of proper art handling and health and safety standards. The preferred schedule is Monday - Thursday, 9am-4:15pm, however flexibility to work an adjusted schedule based on project needs is required.

Duties and Responsibilities

* Assist colleagues in the Curatorial department, contract preparators, riggers, artists, and others to safely complete the installation of indoor exhibitions. Includes physically handling artwork, loading/unloading trucks, hanging signage, lighting, providing input in pre-planning meetings. May require the use of ladders, lift-gates, hand-trucks, pallet jacks, fork lifts, scissor lifts, and dollies.
* Prepare the exhibition galleries for new exhibitions which may include painting, spackling, sanding, cleaning, moving pedestals, framing, and setting up/breaking down temporary wall panels. May occasionally include building pedestals, shelves, and mounts. Requires use of manual and power tools.
* Assist with the installation of work outdoors as needed, often in partnership with outside riggers, facility staff, and contractors.
* Assist with the cleaning of outdoor sculpture seasonally as schedule permits when assigned.
* Conduct weekly inspections of the indoor galleries, outdoor collections, and storage areas.
* Install, inventory, and maintain the appearance of outdoor signage.
* Maintain cleanliness and order in storage areas and advise on supply reorders.
* Attend weekly meetings with Curatorial department team. Attend monthly full staff meetings.
* Assist in the training and supervising of collections care volunteers.
* Assist in the annual inventory of the collection.
* Interact with staff, visitors, artists, and exhibition partners in a positive manner. Must be comfortable under pressure and remain cognizant of deadlines.
* All other duties as assigned.

Requirements

* Minimum of 2 years' experience installing artwork at a non-profit museum or art gallery.
* Bachelor's degree in related field such as fine arts, art history, museum studies or similar field strongly preferred, however additional experience will be considered in lieu of education.
* Experience with proper art handling techniques
* Ability to be flexible with work schedule
* Basic electrical wiring skills preferred
* Forklift certification preferred
* Experience with SketchUp or similar programs is a plus
* Basic proficiency with Microsoft Office suite of programs
