Reporting to the Head of Preparation, participates as a member of the museum’s Preparation team with a specialization and focus in carpentry. The incumbent performs production design, fabrication, and installation of exhibition furniture and display cases; installs casework and displays in the galleries. S/he is responsible for the maintenance and operations of the woodshop.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
Participates in the production design, fabrication, and installation of furniture and displays for exhibitions.
Leads a team to prepare, construct, install, and de-install exhibits; build showcases, mounts, partitions, platforms, pedestals, and temporary walls; paint with brushes, rollers, and spray equipment.
Assists in exhibition planning logistics including staging, layout, and install; reads and interprets plan drawings and schematics and provides layout/installation directions for other staff; ensures appropriate tools and equipment are available for efficient and proper installation.
Fabricates boxes, containers, crates, and conveyances for the storage and transit of art; retrofits existing crates and containers.
Ensures organization, cleanliness and safety of woodshop and related work areas; implements training and safe operation of equipment including table saw, band saw, sliding compound miter saw, drill press, air compressors, pneumatic tools, and cordless power tools as required.
Participates in production design of casework and furniture with the Design and Conservation departments, ensuring that preservation and aesthetic requirements for display of artwork are met.
Recommends and orders equipment, tools and supplies needed to maintain and operate a woodshop; oversees maintenance, repair and inventory of related tools, supplies and equipment.
Assists other Museum Services staff in the movement, storage, installation, de-installation and display of art objects and and associated exhibition components, such as furniture.
RequirementsMINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
BA with course work or training in fine arts or museum studies, or other related field or a combination of education and experience
Five (5) years of art installation experience including experience in production design and installation of exhibit furniture and casework or comparable commercial experience
Three (3) years experience running a woodshop including directing the work of other team members, such as junior carpenters, carpenters or finishers
Excellent communication skills, spoken and written; direct experience translating details of shop drawings into production
Skill in rough and finish carpentry, framing, cabinetry, variety of finishes and finishing techniques, adhesives, fasteners, power and pneumatic tools; the safe use and operation of heavy equipment in work areas and galleries; woodshop related safety codes, ordinances and regulations
Strong knowledge of variety of material handling processes including lumber, plastics and signage materials; working knowledge of drafting software such as AutoCad, Vectorworks, Rhino, and/or Sketchup
Techniques of crate construction and container fabrication; how to stabilize art while in transit; techniques of art handling, installation, and de-installation for three dimensional objects
Ability to lift and move heavy objects up to 75 lbs.; to physically handle delicate and valuable works of art with extreme care
Ability to demonstrate creativity and innovation in problem solving and working with artists; function efficiently under pressure with conflicting demands; work from sketches and follow oral descriptions or instructions; successfully articulate fabrication needs and concepts to coworkers
COMPENSATION
$27.1866 - $32.6517 per hour* with a generous benefits package
