Head of Art Preparation and Installation (Regular Full-Time)
With more than 130,000 objects dating from ancient times to the present, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) is the largest art museum in the western United States. Reporting to the Director of Collections Management and Registration, the Head of Art Preparation and Installation is a key member of the museum team playing an integral role in LACMA’s extensive and diverse art programs: exhibitions, permanent collections, and outgoing and incoming loans. This position is essential in management of the programs on-site during the east campus construction period, and in planning for satellite spaces for exhibitions in diverse communities throughout Los Angeles County, and the opening of the new Peter Zumthor building.
Some duties include: leads in the operation and direction of Art Preparation and Installation Department; administers the Art Preparation and Installation team currently comprised of 4 supervisors; hires, schedules and supervises temporary art preparators as needed to support the active art programs; oversees department’s safe handling, movement, unpacking and packing of art of many mediums and fragility levels, and loading and off-loading of trucks of packed artwork; oversees department’s installation and de-installation of approximately 30 exhibitions per year; oversees department’s assistance in preparing galleries for exhibition, which includes fabrications of book cradles, fabric wrap pedestal risers, and installations of wall object labels; leads the rigging program, and plans for and rigs large-scale art, and contracts with local fine art services and rigging/crane operating companies as needed;develops and manages the annual departmental budget and API costs for each exhibition and special projects; orders, purchases, and maintains small to large equipment, tools and supplies, and oversees, with experience and ability, the use of these; prepares annual department statistics; collaborates and coordinates art program workflow with various departments; assists collection management with art movement in storage, registrars with documenting packing and crating and installation of artwork, conservation with art movement in labs, and photographers during art photoshoots; proactively works to review current approaches to API responsibilities and to ensure work solutions reflect up-to-date methods; develops, modifies and implements procedures and guidelines for all API responsibilities; mentors and trains department staff while also evaluating, coordinating, monitoring their work, acting as an advisor in staff meeting schedules and resolving technical or operational problems; ensures budgets, schedules, and performance requirements are met for the department; participates in the Emergency Preparedness Committee’s Collections Team and the Risk Management Task Force; occasionally acts as courier for domestic and international trips and reviews and approves of this travel for the API staff; travels to and from LACMA locations across Los Angeles; performs other duties and special projects as assigned.
The qualified candidate will have a bachelor’s degree in art, art history, museum studies, or related field. At least 12 years of art handling experience in a museum environment and at least 8 years of supervisory and project/process management experience as a lead preparator is required. The ideal candidate will have the ability to teach and explain correct methods and procedures for safe handling of artworks and equipment and broad knowledge and experience with API vendors. Database knowledge is required (TMS experience preferred) as well as a proficiency in Microsoft Office programs and Google applications. Fluency in Spanish or another foreign language is preferred. Must be able to lift or move at least 50 lbs. and stand for long periods when working. Valid driver’s license is required.
