Preparator – Assistant:

The Historic New Orleans Collection (THNOC) is a museum, research center, and publisher dedicated to the study and preservation of the history and culture of New Orleans and the Gulf South region. THNOC is a collection of over 35,000 library items, more than two miles of documents and manuscripts, and over 350,000 photographs, prints, drawings, paintings, and other artifacts. The Collection is currently accepting resumes for the position of Preparator-Assistant.

The Preparator – Assistant assists with all aspects of museum exhibition installations and ensures the safe handling of all works of art. This position assists with exhibition-related tasks such as exhibition installation, exhibition de-installation, graphic production, construction of exhibition fixtures, gallery painting, lighting, mount making, matting and framing, construction of crates, and art handling and installation. This position assists with the safe movement of art objects within the museums and transport of art objects to and from the museums and other sites.

The successful candidate must have experience in general carpentry, framing materials and techniques, installation and lighting concepts, and preparatory tools and a general knowledge of metal fabrication, mount making, crating or case construction, and storage methods and collections care. Additionally, the Preparator - Assistant must demonstrate exceptional teamwork and communication skills, a proficiency in Microsoft Office, an ability to be flexible in an evolving environment, and the ability to learn and apply preparatory techniques and best practices. This position regularly moves objects up to 40 pounds and occasionally up to 100 pounds. A valid driver’s license is required. Prefer one year of related experience and a bachelor’s degree in fine arts, art history, museum studies, or a related field.
