The New Mexico Department of Cultural Affairs is hiring an Exhibition Designer for its Museum Resources Division. This position collaborates with curatorial, collections, and exhibitions staff to design exhibitions for the New Mexico Museum of Art, Museum of International Folk Art, Museum of Indian Arts and Culture and other museums and historic sites within the New Mexico Department of Cultural Affairs. Our Exhibition Designers are responsible for coordinating the work multi-disciplinary teams to accomplish all the tasks required to create museum exhibits from design through installation.
The candidate selected for this position will conduct research to translate conceptual ideas into compelling exhibits, maintain aspects of the budget approved for an exhibit, and oversee outside contractors. The candidate selected for this position will be responsible for creating complex exhibit designs and needs a high level of problem solving and computer drafting skills. This position requires a comprehensive understanding of museum operations and exhibit related communication standards, design concepts and interpretation practices and standards.
This position is part of the Creative Services team, a collaborative group of exhibition and graphic designers, fabricators, and preparators that provide design, build, and installation services for multiple divisions in the New Mexico Department of Cultural Affairs. This is a permanent, full-time position with the State of New Mexico and includes health and retirement benefits.

Requirements

Associates Degree in Design, Architecture, Applied Arts, Fine Arts, or Graphic Design or related field and two (2) years of experience in exhibition design and/or fabrication. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling four (4) years may substitute for the required education experience.
At least 2 years experience designing major exhibitions for museums or galleries.
Experience managing the work of an exhibition construction and installation team (including fabricators and preparators).
Experience using SketchUp, VectorWorks or other drafting software.
Experience with color and material selection for exhibition gallery spaces.
Experience creating blueprints, construction drawings.
Experience preparing exhibition budgets and ordering supplies and materials.

Other requirements:
Computer workstation used daily with sitting, standing, and phone use in an office setting and occasional work using tools, ladders, and/or lifts in Museum gallery setting. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs.
Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license. Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course Certificate as a condition of continued employment.
