The Riley County Historical Museum Curator of Collections is part of the management team with primary responsibility for planning, organizing and supervising the museum’s collections management and registration system. The position has additional responsibilities in education and supervision of volunteers and interns.

The Riley County Historical Museum is a Department of Riley County government. The Museum was founded over 100 years ago by the Riley County Historical Society, a 501 c 3 not for profit, which continues to support the Museum. The Riley County Historical Museum administers a collection of around 85,000 objects, a library/archives of over 4,500 books and monographs, 10,800 cubic feet of manuscripts and archives, and over 27,000 photographic negatives and images. The collections are exhibited in our main Museum building (built 1976) and in five historic buildings. Our staff of four full time and five part time employees, with the help of over one hundred volunteers, conduct an array of education programs that includes tours, lectures, classes, and local history publications for children and adults. RequirementsMinimum Qualifications:


Bachelor’s Degree. Master’s Degree preferred. Degrees in museum studies or history preferred.
Three years demonstrated experience in supervision of museum collections. (Master’s Degree may substitute.)

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:


Demonstrated experience conducting research.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Excellent analytical skills, judgement, attention to detail, accuracy, and ability to work independently.
Proficiency in computer use. Experience with Past Perfect collections software preferred.
Experience in social media, web and digital information applications preferred.
Working knowledge of collections professional standards and the ability to properly and safely handle objects and records.
Working knowledge of American history, an appreciation for local history, and an interest in developing expert knowledge in the history of Riley County.
Working knowledge of American decorative arts and material culture.
Professional attitude and interest in providing leadership in history, material culture and preservation.
Work well in cooperation with staff, boards and the public.
Ability to lift at least 40 pounds, carry, climb ladders and stairs as well as conduct cleaning of objects and historic properties.
Must have a valid drivers license and continuous, reliable automobile transportation.
Preference is given to Riley County resident, or willingness to become a Riley County resident within one year of employment.
Pre-employment background screening and drug-testing is required upon conditional offer of employment.

Duties:


Supervises selection, registration, documentation, exhibition, and storage of collections.
Oversees the management of the collection by maintaining appropriate records, supervising proper environmental control, directing and following professional standards and practices.
Develops policy and procedures for collections management as needed.
Conducts research and prepares reports as needed.
Recruits, trains, and supervises collections interns, volunteers, and staff.
Assists with interpretive plans, education programs, exhibits, and other projects of the Museum.
Interacts with donors or potential donors and assists the public as needed.
Assists with the Museum digital educational offering.
Helps to maintain the physical standards of the Museum and other collections locations.
Assists with disaster preparedness/security/emergency/safety plans.
Provides leadership in collections, history and preservation in the community and beyond.
