The Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art at the University of Oklahoma seeks an experienced preparator. The museum has 63,000 square feet and the strengths of the permanent collection include French Impressionism, American art, Native American art, photography, Asian art, and European graphics. Several temporary in-house and traveling exhibitions are mounted annually. The museum began a new expansion in 2009 with the addition of approximately 6,000 sq. feet of exhibition space, additional storage and an education classroom. The new space, scheduled for an opening of spring, 2011, will house the Eugene B. Adkins Collection. The FJJMA will be open and fully active during the construction process.

The successful candidate will work in the museum’s preparation department as part of a team; possibly supervise interns, and contract labor while reporting to the deputy director/curator of collections; assist curators in exhibition design; prepare, install, maintain, and disassemble exhibitions and galleries; design and construct exhibition furniture and mounts for display; work closely with the registrar and curators in all areas of collection care; pack and crate art; maintain light fixtures in the galleries; oversee service personnel in secure areas of the museum; occasionally assist with setup and breakdown for events; and perform diversified duties involving planning, coordinating, and prioritizing efforts.

Requirements include substantial museum experience in installation, lighting, art handling, matting, framing and presentation; knowledge of conservation requirements for artworks; experience in constructing crates and exhibition furniture; experience operating hand and power tools; knowledge of materials appropriate for art museums; and, the ability to lift 100 lbs.
