Washington DC’s children deserve a world-class museum to spark their imagination and encourage them to dream. When National Children’s Museum reopens steps off the National Mall and Pennsylvania Avenue in Spring 2019, this innovative, modern museum will celebrate the joy of childhood through science, technology, engineering, art, and math exhibits.
As the Exhibits Manager, you will realize this vision for the Museum’s reopening and subsequently for hundreds of thousands of visitors each year. You share in the Museum’s commitment to building an inclusive, diverse, and imaginative children’s museum. You get up each morning excited to apply your creativity, organizational prowess, and project management skills to make a positive impact.
You enjoy the fast pace of a start-up environment and draw upon multiple skills to realize transformative learning and play experiences. You geek out over spreadsheets and Gantt charts and know your way around a workshop. You are a self-starter with experience in all phases of the design process who thrives in a highly collaborative environment.
What you’ll do:
- Expertly manage the development, fabrication, installation, deinstallation and ongoing operation of multiple Museum exhibits
- Craft and implement exhibit development schedules that ensure timely completion of all milestones and deliverables
- Manage exhibit budgets in consultation with Director of Exhibits and Education
- Collaborate with Museum leadership to conceive, schedule, budget, and plan for future exhibitions and installations
- Establish and manage relationships between multiple internal and external stakeholders, including exhibit designers, fabricators, contractor, and building managers
- Evaluate current practices and stays current with professional standards and exhibits theory,
techniques, and technologies in order to best serve a diverse audience, and evolving staff and visitor needs
- Train and supervise staff, contracted labor, and volunteers to assist with exhibit installation, operation, and deinstallation
- Provide assistance with special events, concessions, gift shop, and other Museum functions as needed
RequirementsWhat we believe are important experiences and traits for this role:
- 3+ years working in project management, operations, fabrication, arts, design, or museum management, with at least one year in a supervisory role
- Production and technical experience through all phases of project design, documentation, and construction administration, fabrication, installation, and operations
- Expert organizational and project management skills with a proven ability to organize and prioritize projects and meet deadlines; leading multiple, complex projects through periods of growth and change
- Demonstrated excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal skills with experience writing, issuing, and managing RFPs
- Familiarity with exhibit fabrication materials, techniques, and schedules
- Facility with design and CAD programs
- Knowledge and experience working with AV/IT and interactive hardware/software systems and troubleshooting
- Experience with digital project management tools
- Collaborative, creative, and meticulous with demonstrated problem solving skills
- Insatiable curiosity with an eagerness to learn, willing to ask questions, and apply feedback
- Passion for creating transformative learning experiences for children, experience building experiences for children or previous work within educational environments preferred

Work Location
Work will be split between the National Children’s Museum Administrative Offices at WeWork White House at 1440 G Street NW, and at the Museum site located at 1300 Pennsylvania Avenue NW. Occasional travel may be required.
