The Burnaby Village Museum is searching for one or more Exhibit Preparators with skills in graphic design, decorative painting, and illustration to work in an auxiliary capacity involving the production and maintenance of exhibit displays as well as researching and preparing outdoor displays. The main responsibility of the incumbent will be to maintain and repair the painted and varnished vintage carousel horses on the Burnaby Village Museum Carousel. Responsibilities include creating permanent, temporary, and travelling exhibits according to plans and specifications. The work will involve preparing a variety of surfaces for painting, and painting surfaces in accordance with detailed plans and instructions. The incumbent will research display techniques and materials, and purchase goods.
The incumbent may also assist with other skilled display and graphic design and trades work at the Museum, including applying various wall treatments as background for displays; photographing exhibitions for documentation purposes; assisting in designing graphic artwork; producing illustrations as well as performing other related work as required.
Qualifications for this role include graduation from a Community College in commercial or graphic arts design plus sound knowledge of graphic design techniques, including producing line drawings and illustrations or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Additional qualifications include skills in decorative painting and illustration; the ability to direct the work of volunteers and auxiliary staff; the ability to prepare cost estimates and monitor the budget; and skill in the use and care of a variety of materials, tools, and equipment used in the work. The ideal candidate will be detail oriented, able to work alone or in a team within given timelines. As this is an auxiliary position, the hours of work will vary and include weekends and evenings.
Hourly Wage: $29.16 with 12% in lieu of benefits (Pay Grade 19).
